ROME--Italian insurer Assicurazioni Generali SpA (G.MI) said Thursday it plans to raise its dividend payment for 2016 by 11% from a year ago after posting a higher net profit for the period.

The company said it plans to pay a EUR0.80 dividend a share for last year, compared with the EUR0.72 it paid for 2015.

Net profit for the year stood at EUR2.1 billion ($2.2 billion), up 2.5% from the previous year.

The Trieste-based insurer said the net profit was buoyed by improved performance across different segments of the business and lower costs.
