Like most countries around the world, Slovenia also has a trophy to award the best football players in the country, wherever they are currently playing.

The award, which is presented by EkipaSN magazine, started in 2008, and, to date, six players have already been presented with this trophy, showing that their talent is recognized by their country of origin.

So today we bring you the list of the players who have already won this very important prize in Slovenian football and who were the biggest winners, those who could most often be called the best football player in Slovenia.

Some of these players play for big outfits in Europe, such as:

  • Jan Oblak
  • Samir Handanovic
  • Josip Ilicic

Before we continue, we would like to thank the help of author Tomaš Selinec, an expert in sports matters, who helped us to create this list. You can check her profile clicking here.

Milivoje Novaković

The first winner of this award was Milivoje Novakovic, in 2008. At the time, he played for FC Köln from Germany, a club where he arrived in 2006 and stayed for 8 years.

Although he never played for a large European club, with Köln perhaps being the best known of them in the world, Novakic rode quite a lot among different football clubs, ending his career at Maribor in 2017.

In the year that he received the Slovenian Footballer of the Year award, the striker was the top scorer of the 2. Bundesliga, with 20 goals, certainly justifies the award received.

He also played for Slovenian NT for 11 years, participating in 80 matches and scoring a total of 32 goals.

Samir Handanović

Samir Handanovic was the second winner of the trophy and he received it three times: 2009, 2011, and 2012. In the first two he still played for Udinese, while the last time he received the trophy, he was already part of Internazionale, a club for which he still plays.

Although goalkeepers often did not have their talents recognized, this certainly did not happen at the Slovenian Footballer of the Year award. And this is because Handanovic really had brilliant performances at certain moments in his career.

Currently 36 years old, the goalkeeper is still an extremely important figure in the Inter Milan team. Unfortunately, he retired from Slovenian NT in 2015 after the team failed to qualify for Euro 2016.

Valter Birsa

In 2010, the award went to Valter Birsa, a midfielder who was playing for Auxerre de France at the time. And this was not the only known team in the world he played for.

Despite having won the award only in the year he played for Auxerre, Birsa had a good time for Sochaux – in which he was champion of the Coupe de France – and also an interesting moment at Chievo, from 2015 to 2019.

For his country, Birsa started in the U-15, moving up to the main team. In Slovenian NT, he played 90 games and scored a total of 7 goals.

Kevin Kampl

Kevin Kampl won the award twice during his career, in the years 2013 and 2014. On both occasions, he was a player on the Austrian team Red Bull Salzburg.

Despite being born in Germany, Kampl moved to the city of Maribor as a child and therefore has dual citizenship. He chose to play for Slovenian NT and started in 2009, still at U-20.

The best moment in his career was certainly at RB Salzburg, where he won not only the Austrian Bundesliga but also the Austrian Cup in the 2013-14 season. This earned him two Slovenian Footballer of the Year trophies in those years.

After leaving RB Salzburg, Kampl ended up dropping production at Borussia Dortmund. He currently plays for RB Leipzig, also from Germany, where he has been since the 2017-18 season.

Jan Oblak

The biggest winner of the Slovenian Footballer of the Year award is goalkeeper Jan Oblak, who has already received the trophy 5 times. The first was in 2015 and he had a winning streak for three years. In 2020, he received the award for the fifth time and may have a good chance of receiving it again in 2021.

Every time the goalkeeper won the prize, he played for Atletico Madrid, a team he continues to play for today. With Atleti, he has already won a Spanish Supercup, a UEFA Europa League, and also a UEFA Supercup. Not to mention the Champions League fines in which he arrived.

In Slovenian NT, he has been playing in the main team since 2012, in addition to being called up since the U-15. For his country, he has already played 36 matches and is currently trying to help them reach the next world cup.

Josip Iličić

Ilicic was the only one who managed to disrupt Jan Oblak’s streak, winning the Slovenian Footballer of the Year award in 2019, playing for the Italian team of Atalanta.

In addition to being the runners-up of the Italian Cup in the 2018-19 season, we all know about Atalanta’s great UEFA Champions League campaign that season, surprising many people around the world. This certainly made the winger the winner of the footballer of the year award in his home country.

Ilicic continues to play for Atalanta, in which he already has 109 games, with 43 goals scored. For Slovenian NT – in which he has played since 2010 – he has participated in 71 matches with 11 goals scored.

Where to bet on Slovenian players

Sports betting always gets a lot of attention from sports fans and of course, we always like to bet on our favorite players or teams. And with so many betting options available, we often wonder which one to choose.

Slovenski nogometaši puščajo velik pečat v svetovnem nogometu. Večkrat odločajo tekme s svojimi predstavami in postavljajo ekipe v sam svetovni vrh.

That is why we recommend the MightyTips website, which offers a complete list of bookmakers available and with reviews made by experts in the field. That way you can choose your favorite without having to spend a lot of time analyzing each one and bet on your favorite players and leagues.
