Amazon.com Inc. is planning five new solar projects in China, Australia and the U.S. that could help it reach its aim of 100% renewable energy five years ahead of the 2030 target.

The five utility-scale projects will supply about 1.2 million megawatt-hours of additional renewable energy to the company's fulfillment network and Amazon Web Services data centers, it said Thursday.

This will support Amazon's aims of 80% renewable energy by 2024, 100% renewable energy by 2030--and potentially 2025--and net zero carbon by 2040, it said.

One of the new projects will be a 100-megawatt solar project in Shandong that will be Amazon's first renewable energy project in China.

It is also planning a solar project in New South Wales, Australia that will generate enough clean energy for about 40,000 average Australian homes, as well as two projects in Ohio and one in Virginia that will have the combined capacity to power roughly 69,000 average U.S. homes a year.
