The American media behemoth, The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS),
lost the digital streaming rights to the most popular cricket
league in the world, the Indian Premier League (IPL), to competitor
Viacom18. Nonetheless, it did retain the TV viewership rights of
the same for its Star India Television network. Following the news,
DIS stock closed down 1.6% at $94.22 on June 14. What Makes IPL
Lucrative for Streaming? Launched in 2008, IPL has become a
household name in India, the second most populated country in the
world. India is a cricket-crazy nation, and viewing rates peak
during the two-month-long IPL season.
