General Motors Co. on Wednesday said it was introducing Ultifit, an end-to-end software platform "designed to unlock new vehicle experiences and connect customers' digital lives."

GM said the platform, which uses Linux software, will enable the delivery of features, apps and services to customers remotely. "It offers the potential for more cloud-based services, faster software development and new opportunities to increase customer loyalty," GM said.

The company said with Ultifit, customers can expect regular updates and choose from personalization options and apps for their vehicle. With an authenticated account, some of these upgrades can be transferred between vehicles, the company said.

GM said Ultifit is an in-house platform, but added "it's being designed with external developers in mind."
