Home Depot Inc. said Thursday that its board elected President and Chief Executive Officer Ted Decker to succeed Craig Menear as chairman.

The change, effective Oct. 1, comes as Mr. Menear will retire as chair effective Sept. 30.

Mr. Decker became CEO of the home-improvement chain in March.
