Mercedes-Benz AG said Tuesday that electric-vehicle sales from
its Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars business more than doubled last
year, a welcome development for the German luxury auto maker as it
plans to roll out its own global network of electric-vehicle
chargers.
Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars delivered 2,043,900 vehicles to
customers last year, 1% fewer than in 2021, as the industry reeled
from what remained of coronavirus restrictions as well as
semiconductor and logistic bottlenecks.
However, battery electric-vehicle sales surged to 117,800 units
from 52,500 in 2021. Battery electric-vehicle sales more than
doubled in the last quarter of the year to 42,400 units.
"We now have eight fully electric models in showrooms, we
continue to lift the charging experience of our customers to
another level and we were once again able to increase our brand
value by 10% to remain the world's most valuable luxury automotive
brand," Britta Seeger, a management board member at the group,
said.
Mercedes-Benz said last week during an event in Las Vegas that
it intends to install roughly 10,000 high-power EV chargers
worldwide, starting in the U.S. and Canada this year.
Earlier on Tuesday, Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, or BMW, said
electric-vehicle sales more than doubled in 2022 from the previous
year.
