Siemens AG (SIE.XE) said Tuesday that it will build an 840-megawatt gas-fired power plant for SSE PLC (SSE.LN) in the U.K.

The German conglomerate said the plant, in which SSE is investing GBP350 million ($467.2 million), is expected to start running in 2022. It is set to replace coal power plants that will be closing down. The plant will feature Siemens' SGT-9000HL gas turbine, for which there will be a 15-year service contract.

The plant's "highly efficient technology, not previously seen in the UK, will provide firm, reliable power from the early 2020s at half the carbon emissions of the coal generation it is replacing," said Martin Pibworth, director of wholesale at SSE.

Construction will begin in the summer, Siemens said.
