International stocks trading in New York closed mostly lower Thursday.

The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts closed 0.3% lower at 144.99. The European index fell 0.5% to 139.56. The Latin American index rose 2.9% to 180.75. The emerging-markets index also increased 0.6% to 286.22. The Asian index decreased 0.4% to 170.01.

The ADRs of Zai Lab Ltd. and HSBC Holdings PLC traded actively.

ADRs of Zai Lab on Thursday closed higher after the company said its study in non-small cell lung cancer with Novocure Ltd. met its primary endpoint, demonstrating a statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvement in overall survival over standard therapies alone.

ADRs of HSBC Holdings PLC also closed higher following Jefferies's analyst note on the bank's capital return prospects and positive gearing to China's reopening being underappreciated.
