Performance

-- February 2021 marks the eleventh consecutive month in which MPLF grew its NAV and outperformed the Credit Suisse Leveraged Loan Index ("CSLLI"). NAV total return was 1.11% for the month, compared to the total return of the CSLLI of 0.67%.(2)

-- Continuing upward movement of U.S. leveraged loan prices in February, mainly from a persistent loan supply shortage amidst strong demand from robust CLO creation and retail fund inflows, led to an improvement in the valuation of MPLF's portfolio.

-- MPLF has continued to outperform relevant benchmarks in recent months, delivering a cumulative NAV return of 109.48% since March 2020 compared to 20.70%, 23.10% and 49.79%, respectively, for the CSLLI, ICE BAML High Yield Index and S&P 500 for the same period.

-- As at 28 February 2021, none of MPLF's investment vehicles held either of the two S&P/LSTA index constituents that defaulted in February, and MPLF experienced no defaults in its underlying portfolios. Due to other defaults rolling off the calculation, the index's lagging 12-month default rate by notional amount decreased to 3.25%.

Market

-- Strong demand for loans and a persistent supply shortage despite high headline issuance volumes resulted in the loan market posting its tenth consecutive monthly gain with the CSLLI delivering a 0.67% return in February. The average indicative bid price of CSLLI moved up to 97.79% at 26 February from 96.80% at 31 January. This is the highest average price for the index since October 2018. The weighted average indicative bid price of MPLF's loans increased to 98.66% at 26 February from 98.51% at 31 January.

-- Headline CLO issuance in February remained strong as 31 new issue CLOs totaling $15.0 billion priced during the month. This is the highest monthly issuance figure since April 2019. In addition to new issue CLO volume, the monthly issuance was also characterized by CLO refinancing and reset transactions as managers and equity investors looked to improve financing on existing deals in the tightening CLO liability market. In the aggregate 27 refinancings totaling $11.7 billion and 22 resets totaling $12.3 billion priced during the month according to S&P/LCD.

-- Institutional loan volume increased in February with $61.2 billion of headline issuance. This is the largest monthly institutional volume total since January 2020, and the largest February total on record. Furthermore, approximately $55.6 billion of February repricing transactions are not included in these headline new issuance figures. However, over 50% of the institutional issuance in January and February has related to refinancing and dividend recap transactions. Despite the high headline issuance, the total outstanding amount of the S&P/LSTA Index declined for the second consecutive month as repayments offset the organic new loan issuance.

-- Retail funds experienced an inflow of approximately $4.2 billion in February as reported by J.P. Morgan. This matches the $4.2 billion inflow tally from January, which was the largest since March 2017.

-- Since the end of February, the average indicative bid price of the CSLLI has decreased by 0.24% to 97.55% (as at 22 March 2021).

Investment

-- On 3 February Marble Point CLO XIX closed. As previously disclosed, MPLF invested $12.7 million for a 36.7% interest in the equity tranche of the CLO.

-- As previously mentioned, during February MPLF sold its investment in the Marble Point CLO XVIII equity tranche.

-- During February, MPLF purchased $17.05 million notional of the equity tranche in the MP CLO IV transaction in the secondary market. Marble Point & affiliates now hold a majority of the equity in this CLO.

-- Subsequent to month end Marble Point priced a refinancing of several classes of debt of Marble Point CLO X, in which MPLF holds $38.5 million notional value of the equity tranche. The refinancing is expected to improve the CLO's weighted average cost of debt, which aggregates $460.0 million, by approximately 19 basis points from L+182 to L+163 and is slated to close on 15 April.
