Star Navigation Comments on MH370 Costs

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Apr 8, 2014) - Star Navigation Systems Group Ltd. (TSX-VENTURE:SNA) ("Star" or the "Company"), like the rest of the World, has followed the search for MH370 with sadness, concern and regret.

Star's initial comment on this loss came some two weeks after MH370 disappeared (see Press Release March 21, 2014). At that time, Star stated that it was unfortunate that the lessons learned from the investigation of the loss of AF447 had not been acted upon by the aviation community, and by those tasked with overseeing the safety of both the travelling public and flight crews.

Over the past weeks, Star has noted that one of the reasons for lack of action in this area, put forward by some aviation commentators, is cost to the airlines and slim profit margins in the industry. Apparently, these commentators feel that the airlines simply cannot afford to invest in additional equipment and services.

Star does not believe that these cost arguments are justified.

As stated in Star's March 21, 2014 press release, the technology exists today which, had it been installed on MH370, could have provided not only the precise location of the aircraft during both the flight and its termination, but also data concerning possible causes of the loss, if it was accidental in origin. There are several different systems available which address this issue to differing degrees. The STAR-A.D.S. ™ System is the first system in the world to provide real-time, onboard data capture, diagnostics and analysis while the aircraft is in flight, together with transmission of required data and location via satellite to the ground.

The important issue as regards costs is that the STAR-A.D.S.™ System can be demonstrated to pay for itself in less than one year, through cost savings in fuel management and optimization, reduction in unplanned maintenance delays, and automation of regulatory reporting (FOQA and MOQA) as well as crew operational costing (OOOI times). The system-provided OOOI times calculates accurate flight hours as compared to "manual recording by crews" and assists in optimizing intervals of various maintenance checks on the aircraft.

The cost issue is not relevant. Star again calls for immediate action with respect to the implementation of the recommendations contained in the BEA Report on AF447.
