Mining giant Rio Tinto PLC (RIO) said Thursday Chris Lynch, an experienced mining industry executive and currently chief executive of toll road developer Transurban Group Ltd. (TCL.AU), has joined its board as a non-executive director.

Lynch held a number of positions at BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP) between 2000 and 2007, spending six years as chief financial officer before becoming executive director and group president of the carbon steel materials unit. Prior to that he held various roles at Alcoa Inc. (TCL.AU), including vice president and chief information officer between 1999 and 2000.

"He has nearly 30 years of tremendous experience acquired in the mining and metals industry," said Jan du Plessis, chairman of Anglo-Australian Rio. "In addition, Chris is a leading figure in the Australian business community and his appointment reflects the significance of Australia to Rio Tinto's global operations."
