Eni has started oil-and-gas production at the Baleine Field in Ivory Coast, the Italian energy firm said Monday.

"For the initial phase, production takes place through the Baleine FPSO, a refurbished and upgraded floating production storage and offloading unit capable of handling up to 15,000 bbl/d [barrels of oil a day] of oil and around 25 mscf/d [million standard cubic feet a day] of associated gas," CEO Claudio Descalzi said.

Phase 2 is expected to begin by the end of 2024, increasing field production to 50,000 barrels of oil a day and around 70 million standard cubic feet of gas a day. The third phase will aim to elevate field production up to 150,000 barrels of oil and 200 million standard cubic feet of gas a day.

"The first oil from Baleine is a milestone in Eni's operations. Stemming from an extraordinary exploration success, we have achieved an industry-leading time-to-market of under two years from the declaration of commercial discovery," Descalzi said.

Eni is carrying out the project, which is the first emission-free scope 1 and 2 project in Africa, alongside its Ivorian partner Petroci. Baleine is the largest hydrocarbon discovery in the Ivorian sedimentary basin, Eni said.
