GameTap Offers Unlimited Play and Hundreds of Videogames for $14.95
Per Month, a Valuable Gift Alternative or Complement to Pricier
Games and Consoles ATLANTA, Dec. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Thanks to a new
gift card from GameTap, shoppers can avoid long lines and give the
gift that keeps on giving -- a subscription to the GameTap
broadband entertainment network. The first-of-its- kind network
from Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.), GameTap offers
access to over 300 of the greatest videogames, playable from a
broadband connected PC. With enough challenges to battle around the
clock -- without shrink-wrap or shipping charges -- GameTap has
been heralded as the "#1 pick" in Electronic Gaming Monthly's Hot
10 list for January 2006. GameTap gift cards in one- or three-month
increments are available during the holiday season for a limited
time on http://www.gametap.com/. A one-month subscription is only
$14.95. Three-month gift certificates are $39.95 -- a savings over
the monthly price. According to the National Retail Federation,
this holiday season, almost half of consumers will purchase gifts
online. "Critical mass of broadband has arrived with close to half
of online households now connecting to the Internet via broadband,"
says GameTap General Manager Stuart Snyder. "This, combined with
the growth of online shopping and the broad appeal of GameTap
should help us bring GameTap into many homes over the holidays." At
well under $200 for a year-long subscription, GameTap only costs
about half the price of a next-generation console, subscribers gain
entry to an ever-expanding library of game content, including
exclusive access to past consoles. Much more than just games,
GameTap offers a diverse mix of original programming that evolves
and grows with the service. For example, GameTap's celebrity
lifestyle show, Fame and Game, peeks into the mansions, movie set
trailers, tour buses, and recording studios to see where
celebrities are playing video games and what they're playing. With
gift card in hand, game lovers just download the GameTap software,
which acts as a gateway to the GameTap vault. The multi-level vault
features a diverse mix of titles and platforms -- something for
everyone. These are organized in a series of game rings, including
"hot picks" and user favorites, as well as games organized by game
type (e.g., action, adventure, strategy, etc) and game system
(e.g., Sega Dreamcast and Genesis, Atari 2600, PC games and more).
Once a game is selected, each title displays an associated
"InfoCard" that includes directions for playing, control options,
and tips, as well as parental controls (the vault contains "E,"
"E10+" and "T" titles, only) and top scores from the GameTap
community. GameTap features everything from Pong(R), Pac-Man(R) and
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell(R), to Sonic(R) and Myst(R). Turner has
licensed nearly 1,200 games from 24 publishers, including
Activision, Atari, Capcom(R), Cyan, Codemasters, Dreamcatcher
Interactive, Eidos Interactive, Electronic Arts, First Star
Software, G-Mode, Intellivision Lives, Ironstone, Knowledge
Adventure, Midway, Namco, SEGA, TAITO, Take-Two Interactive
Software, Taurus Media, Team 17, Telegames, 3000AD, Ubisoft and
Vivendi Universal Games. Because games reside securely on the PC,
not across a network, they play as if they were still on the
console or at the arcade, with fast response times, 3D effects, and
original colors and characters. GameTap supports navigation and
game play using both a keyboard and mouse, as well as most USB
peripheral game controllers. Like a premium channel, subscribers
will pay a flat monthly fee for an "all-you-can-play" experience on
up to two household PCs and also can have several sub accounts.
