WELLINGTON--Telecom Corp. of New Zealand Ltd. (TEL.NZ) Tuesday said it has contracted Alcatel-Lucent (ALU.FR) to upgrade the telecommunications provider's core transport network.

Alcatel-Lucent will upgrade the network to a converged 100 Gbps Optical Transport Network this calendar year, the company said in a statement.

The investment "is about squeezing more bandwidth out of the same amount of fibre," said Telecom Chief Technology Officer David Havercroft.

Telecom not provide any information about the cost of the investment in the statement.
