MARKET OVERVIEW Overseas markets continue to demonstrate a prowess for the positive, as 11 of the 15 markets that we track are currently positive. The cumulative average return on the group stands at a plus 0.233 percent. It will be pretty quiet on both the economic and earnings calendars as we prepare to deal with the return of traders to this lackluster market. Of import this week will be Federal Reserve Board Chairman Greenspan's Wednesday appearance in Washington and the Federal Reserve Beige Book (for use at the September 21 FOMC meeting) release on the same day. Then we slide until Friday when the Producer Price Index and the Federal Trade deficit figures are released. Issues on this week's earnings calendar will most likely be ignored except by the fragmented groups holding those particular issues. But several stocks ended the rather tepid pre-Labor Day week by making strong upside moves. One such company is Avanir Pharmaceuticals -- a recommendation from the 247Profits Group's investment expert William Colburn. Avanir manufactures a drug that treats Pseudobulbar affect (PBA) -- a condition of uncontrollable laughing or crying that afflicts patients with neurological disorders such as MS, Alzheimer's disease or Lou Gehrig's disease. At the moment, there are no FDA- regulated drugs to treat PBA. But in a recent Phase III trial, Avanir's Neurodex significantly reduced the frequency and severity of PBA attacks. The stock set new 52-week highs of $2.76 and $2.98 on Monday and Tuesday respectively last week and closed Friday at $2.94. Retailer Pacific Sunwear said total sales for the four weeks of August of fiscal 2004 were $155.2 million, an increase of 13.5% over total sales of $136.7 million for the four weeks of August of fiscal 2003. The stock soared over 7% on high volume after the announcement last Thursday and consolidated its position at $20.63 thereafter. And one look at the chart for RAE Systems on Friday shows an enormous volume spike of 1.8 million versus average daily volume of just over 287,000 - on no news.
