Cadre of CIOs Using Twitter as a Secret Weapon to Drive Innovation, Build Working Relationships: Diamond Management & Technol...

Business Wire
Most CIOs have never tried Twitter, but a small cadre of them
are reaping big rewards from the real-time communications platform.
In a survey of 75 tweeting CIOs, Diamond Management &
Technology Consultants, Inc. (NASDAQ: DTPI) found that CIOs
overwhelmingly agree—92 percent —that Twitter is an effective
business tool. In fact, 50 percent of CIOs are tweeting more than
they were last year and most of them are applying what they learn
via Twitter about technology (87.5 percent), innovation (72
percent) and strategy (65 percent) directly to their jobs.
“While many CIOs we talk to are skeptical about the business
benefits of Twitter, some see the platform as a secret weapon to
improve their work performance,” said Chris Curran, a partner and
the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Diamond, who spearheaded the
survey of the CIO Twitter Dashboard membership of over 200 CIOs who
tweet. “I predict that as more CIOs realize the range of ways that
Twitter can give them an edge in the enterprise the community of
tweeting CIOs will expand.”
The survey found that CIOs who actively tweet are using Twitter
to:
- Establish new working
relationships (70 percent)
- Follow news that impacts their
job (92 percent)
- Learn best practices from other
CIOs (75 percent)
- Position themselves as thought
leaders (66 percent)
- Share news about their company
with outsiders (56 percent)
- Monitor how competitors are
using social media (44 percent)
Ironically, while CIOs are busy leveraging Twitter for business,
49 percent of them cite the widespread perception that Twitter is a
waste of time as the biggest barrier to enterprise adoption of the
information networking platform.
“CIOs who are using Twitter effectively and efficiently on a
professional level are perfectly positioned to correct
misperceptions about the platform in the enterprise and to partner
with other business leaders—marketing, advertising and customer
service— to tap employee tweets to drive revenue and improve
customer service,” said Curran, who is also author of the popular
CIO Dashboard blog.
Using Twitter to communicate with employees was near the bottom
of the list at 21 percent, but not because employees are banned
from using Twitter at work, according to the findings. Fifty-four
percent of CIOs said that employees are free to use Twitter as they
see fit.
Other Key Findings from the Survey:
CIOs Prefer Twitter over LinkedIn
LinkedIn has been deemed the haven for business professionals
while Twitter has been seen more as a playground. Surprisingly, 51
percent of CIOs use Twitter for business more than LinkedIn.
CIOs Tweet at least Once a Week
Many CIOs have made Twitter a part of their regular routines.
Forty-one percent of CIOs tweet daily while 37 percent tweet
weekly.
iPad Not Yet the Primary Path to Twitter
When asked about the way that they access Twitter the most, 44
percent of CIOs said they use handheld devices and 45 percent said
a desktop. The popular iPad trailed the pack at 9 percent.
