The Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) documented two years
ago that BMPEA was present in popular supplements marketed to help
consumers lose weight, improve athletic performance, and enhance
cognitive function. BMPEA is known as a “designer stimulant” that
is often labeled as a plant extract, such as acacia rigidula.
Dr. Pieter Cohen, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical
School, is the lead author of a new study that found BMPEA in
several popular supplements. That study concluded that BMPEA has
not before been sold as a food or supplement and, therefore, is not
a legitimate supplement ingredient. The supplements identified in
the study and recent reports as including BMPEA, sorted by their
manufacturers, are:
- Manufacturer: GAT Supplements
- JetFuel Superburn
- JetFuel T-300
- Manufacturer: iForce Nutrition
- Manufacturer: iSatori, Inc.
(OtherOTC:IFIT)
- Manufacturer: Vitacost.com, Inc.
(NasdaqGS:VITC)
- Manufacturer: Hi-Tech Pharmacal Co.,
Inc. (NasdaqGS:HITK)
- Black Widow
- Fastin-XR
- Lipodrene Hardcore
- Lipodrene Xtreme
- Stimerex-ES
- Yellow Scorpion
Despite including BMPEA, none of those supplements reportedly
list it as an ingredient. Some of these supplements are currently
available at Vitamin Shoppe (NYSE:VSI), one of the country’s
largest retailers of supplements, as well as GNC (NYSE:GNC), Target
(NYSE:TGT), Walgreens (NasdaqGS:WBA), and Walmart (NYSE:WMT).
In December, the Canadian government issued a public health
alert about BMPEA to consumers: “Amphetamine stimulants can
increase blood pressure, heart rate and body temperature; lead to
serious cardiovascular complications (including stroke) at high
doses; suppress sleep and appetite, and be addictive.” American
adults spend an estimated $30 billion a year on dietary
supplements. If you have purchased one of the above-listed
supplements and would like to know more about your rights, please
