VLC Media Player Now Available From SourceForge Downloads
June 29 2010 - 3:05PM
Geeknet, Inc. (Nasdaq:LNUX), the online network for the global geek
community, today announced that VideoLAN has chosen the new
SourceForge Downloads service to host its popular VLC media player.
SourceForge Downloads is a free, global distribution service
that provides developers of open source software with access to the
world's largest managed global mirror network, which includes 31
mirror sites on six continents. Built with input from leading open
source project administrators and developers, SourceForge Downloads
allows developers to distribute any open source project, regardless
of where the software is hosted. In addition to providing projects
with increased external visibility, SourceForge Downloads also
includes a set of robust reporting tools and controls that allow
developers to view key statistics, such as download volume,
geographic location and computing platform.
"VideoLAN's selection of SourceForge Downloads to host VLC
validates our strategy to open our global distribution network to
all open source software projects," said Jeff Bates, Vice
President, Product at Geeknet. "VLC launched on our service just
one week ago and has already been downloaded more than four million
times."
The wildly popular VLC project is a free, highly portable
multimedia player, encoder and streamer, supporting most audio and
video formats. Since its inception, the project has been downloaded
over 420 million times.
"By joining forces with SourceForge, our VLC media player gains
greater visibility in the open source community," said Jean Baptise
Kempf, developer for the VideoLAN Project. "Their excellent
in-depth reporting tools allow collection of statistics on our
users, enabling us to improve and refine the project in an
efficient manner."
