BLACKWOOD, N.J., May 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Metrologic Instruments, Inc. (NASDAQ:MTLG) announced today its image-processing software subsidiary, Omniplanar, Inc., is launching SwiftOCR and SwiftVerify, new software compatible with its premier two-dimensional bar code decoding engine -- SwiftDecoder. SwiftOCR software provides high-speed optical character recognition (OCR) of capital letters, numbers and punctuation for area-imaging devices used primarily for established format applications such as reading passport and ISBN codes. The SwiftVerify bar code verification modules quickly and accurately decodes and verifies print quality of one-dimensional bar codes. Both software packages can be used independently or as add-on modules to SwiftDecoder. "These products signify Omniplanar's increased efforts to expand our image-processing product line since our acquisition by Metrologic," said Garrett Russell, General Manager for Omniplanar, based in West Deptford, New Jersey. "As excited as we are about these new releases, Omniplanar will continue to develop software products that will enhance SwiftDecoder's hard- earned reputation of excellence." In order to simplify the integration process, the SwiftOCR engine structure utilizes common pre-defined templates as well as easy-to-create custom templates. Common applications are enabled and include checksum calculations, as defined by their respective specifications. SwiftOCR currently supports both OCR-A and OCR-B fonts and the software architecture accommodates new fonts as needed. Future plans include adding MICR E-13B for bank check reading applications. SwiftVerify utilizes a single image to provide a quality metric based on the ISO/IEC 15416:2000 specifications as well as an equivalent ANSI letter grade. It is faster and more accurate than traditional "swipe" or manual verification devices which require multiple scans for verification. SwiftVerify easily integrates with any Windows or embedded platform and turns any document scanner, fixed-area imager or hand-held imager into a bar code verifier. For added flexibility, SwiftVerify features programmable scan lines (1 to 25) and an option which enables or disables each of the seven grading criteria depending on the needs of a particular application. These two features are critical when illumination or image quality vary across an image. All verification data is provided in a convenient XML string which can be compiled into a detailed report and sent by users to notify those vendors whose poorly printed bar codes are slowing down operational efficiency. About Omniplanar Omniplanar, incorporated in 1989, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Metrologic Instruments, Inc. Omniplanar is regarded as a leader in the field of bar code recognition software, including SwiftDecoder, which decodes all major 1D, 2D and Postal bar code symbologies as well as OCR.
