Overland Storage Customer Honored in InfoWorld 100 State of Oregon
Disk-Based Backup REO Implementation Named One of the Best IT
Projects of 2004 SAN DIEGO, Nov. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Overland Storage, Inc. (NASDAQ:OVRL), a leading provider of backup
and recovery solutions, today announced that one of its customers,
the State of Oregon's Department of Consumer and Business Services,
has been recognized for implementing one of the 100 most innovative
technology projects for 2004 by InfoWorld magazine. InfoWorld
editors honored the State of Oregon for its implementation of
Overland's REO(TM) disk-based backup and recovery system, which
protects mission-critical data for the agency's nine divisions and
17 field offices. West Coast Technology, a Southern
California-based value-added reseller, managed the implementation.
"Our goals were to reduce the time required to backup and restore
data, while also increasing the reliability of the process," said
Ellen Murphy, backup administrator for the Department of Consumer
and Business Services. "The REO system does both. It has slashed
our backup time from 24 hours to six while delivering
near-instantaneous restores. In addition, the reliability of the
REO gives us confidence that our backups will be as error-free and
complete as possible." The InfoWorld 100 provides a unique forum
where IT managers get the recognition they deserve for smart,
successful projects from an audience of their peers. To enter the
winners circle, an InfoWorld 100 project must stretch beyond the
typical, off-the-shelf solution. As judges, InfoWorld editors have
an explicit bias toward multiple technologies used in innovative
ways to serve well-defined business goals. "The InfoWorld 100
recognizes the smartest, most creative, and frankly, coolest IT
projects of 2004," said Steve Fox, editor in chief, InfoWorld.
"Storage initiatives were a big winner, far outstripping last
year's entries, as organizations got serious about business
continuity, information lifecycle management, and a host of backup
projects." Oregon's Department of Consumer and Business Services
was experiencing explosive data growth -- data had doubled each
year for last three years. Weekend backups that were required to
ensure business continuity took at least 24 hours to complete, and
often longer. The department researched the options of virtual tape
solutions or adding another tape library. However, they needed
something more flexible that would allow them to meet current and
immediate future storage requirements, while taking advantage of
newer technologies. The department decided to augment its existing
tape backup operations with a streamlined disk-to-disk (D2D)
solution. It selected reseller West Coast Technology and the
Overland Storage REO disk-based backup and recovery system. As a
high-performance disk-based backup and recovery appliance, the REO
significantly increases the speed of full backups over previous
methods, while providing near-instantaneous restores of current
data. Its ability to handle multiple data streams enables the
department to back up all 80 of its servers in less than six hours
-- a significant improvement over the 24 hours it took previously.
In addition, the department can move the data from the REO to tape
without affecting network performance. "InfoWorld's recognition of
Oregon's use of the REO demonstrates the importance of an effective
disk-based backup and recovery strategy in today's storage
environments," said John Matze, vice president and chief technology
officer, Overland Storage. "It's not enough just to be able to back
up data or reduce backup windows. An effective strategy must
include instantaneous recovery of mission-critical data, which REO
accomplishes for Oregon and countless other customers." For more
