Symmetricom Announces All-Digital, Extended-Range Phase Noise and Allan Deviation Test Set

Business Wire
Symmetricom, Inc. (NASDAQ: SYMM), a worldwide leader in precise
time and frequency technologies that accelerate the deployment and
enable the management of next generation networks, today announced
the all-digital 5125A High-Performance, Extended-Range Phase Noise
and Allan Deviation Test Set (ADEV), a comprehensive solution for
phase noise and stability characterization of frequency sources up
to 400 MHz. The 5125As unique all-digital architecture makes it
easier to characterize high performance sources in this frequency
range.
The 5125A eliminates the need for tedious multi-step
configuration and calibration routines through the use of the
direct sampling technique developed by Symmetricom for lower
frequency oscillators commented Dr. Samuel Stein, chief
technologist at Symmetricom. By extending the technology of
earlier generation test sets, we were able to obtain excellent
performance from the 5125A throughout a much broader frequency
range. This instrument offers an extremely low close-in phase noise
floor (down to -145 dBc/Hz at 1 Hz from a 10 MHz carrier and to
-130 dBc/Hz at 1 Hz from a 100 MHz carrier), which was previously
only available from significantly higher priced multi-box
solutions.
The 5125A combines sophisticated timing technologies into a
single, advanced measurement instrument containing Symmetricoms
patented phase measurement algorithm, allowing fast yet accurate
single sideband (SSB) phase noise and ADEV measurements at the
click of a button, at a fraction of the cost of alternative
solutions. Users simply connect the device under test (DUT) and a
reference, which need not be at the same frequency as the DUT, and
press the start button. Seconds later, valid measurement data
appears on the units high resolution display.
We have used the Symmetricom 5120A phase noise test set to
measure downconverted 5 GHz dielectric resonator oscillators
against the internal references provided by the 5120A option 01,
commentedDr. Jeremy Everard,researchchair
inlowphasenoisesignalgeneration at the University of York in
the United Kingdom, whose work is sponsored by BAE Systems/Royal
Academy of Engineering. Accurate phase noise measurements were
easy to make since the test set does not require phase locking or
frequency matching of the DUT and the internal reference. We look
forward to utilizing the extended frequency range of the new
5125A."
The innovative 5125A includes the following features and
benefits:
- Input frequency range of 1 400
MHz covering a wide range of high performance reference
oscillator frequencies
- Easy to use all digital test set
architecture providing fast and accurate phase noise and Allan
deviation measurements
- Accurate phase noise
measurements as close as 0.0001 Hz from the carrier allows better
characterization of frequency sources for the worlds most
demanding applications such as space and RADAR environments
- Reference need not be at the
same frequency as the device under test devices at any frequency
(up to 400 MHz) can be characterized with a single, fixed frequency
reference
- Highly cost-effective
solution
Availability
