TCS Backs Federal Communications Commission's Efforts to Develop National Commercial Mobile Alert System
April 24 2008 - 7:02AM
Marketwired
ANNAPOLIS, MD (NASDAQ: TSYS), a leading provider of
mission-critical wireless communications, today announced that it
has joined national wireless carriers in support of the Federal
Communications Commission's (FCC) Commercial Mobile Alert System
(CMAS). The CMAS is intended to transmit geographically targeted
emergency alert text messages conveying imminent emergency
threats.
"TCS applauds and fully supports the FCC's ruling on the
development of a national emergency alert program," stated Maurice
B. Tos, President and Chief Executive Officer of TCS. "During
times of emergency, it is critical to put accurate and timely
information directly into the hands of consumers. With our strength
as a leading player in consumer wireless safety, combined with our
experience in delivering billions of text messages daily, we look
forward to the opportunity to work with the government and wireless
operators to make CMAS a reality."
The FCC summarized the alerts that devices would receive under
the system:
-- Presidential Alerts - national emergency-related alerts delivered to
the American public that would preempt any other pending alerts
-- Imminent Threat Alerts - alerts with information on emergencies that
may pose an imminent risk to people's lives or well being
-- Child Abduction Emergency/AMBER Alerts - alerts related to missing or
endangered children due to an abduction or runaway situation
"This system has the potential to significantly impact the way
Americans receive critical warnings on the go, whether they are at
home, work, or vacationing," FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said in a
statement.
TCS' Wireless E-911 system is used to automatically pinpoint
wireless caller location information and ensure that consumers'
emergency calls are routed to the appropriate public safety
answering point (PSAP). TCS not only provides Wireless E-911
service for over 140 million cell phone subscribers today, the
company also delivered 80 billion text messages in the U.S. last
year, representing about 25% of the total 363 billion messages as
reported by the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet
Association (CTIA).
