Dana Corporation to Supply Axles, Driveshafts for New Dodge Ram
SRT-10 High-Performance Truck TOLEDO, Ohio, Dec. 4
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Dana Corporation announced today that it
will supply axles and driveshafts for the new 2004 Dodge Ram SRT-10
high-performance pickup truck. The truck - which is powered by the
500-horsepower, V-10 Viper engine - was formally unveiled earlier
this week. (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/19990903/DANA
) Dana's Model 60 axle relies on a power-hop dampener developed by
the Chrysler Group to enhance vehicle control, while a Dana
Trac-Lok(R) differential splits the intense amount of torque
between the rear wheels. The Dana Model 60 has long been considered
by many to be the industry standard for high-performance vehicles.
The sturdy Model 60 semi-float axle has the strength required to
handle the 525-lb-ft of torque produced by the truck's V-10 engine.
The specialized power-hop dampener is mounted to an aluminum
structural coverplate between the differential and rear axle to
help eliminate wheel-hop during rapid acceleration. Dana's
one-piece aluminum or two-piece steel Spicer driveshaft - depending
on the truck's cab option - transfers the engine's power to the
axle. The one-piece aluminum driveshaft is found on the 120-inch
wheelbase, regular cab SRT-10 truck. The extended, four-door
version of the truck - with a 140-inch wheelbase - features Dana's
two-piece steel driveshaft. The driveshaft is mated to a
heavy-duty, six-speed transmission produced by Tremec, which is
owned by a Dana joint venture. "Dana has a strong heritage of
supplying high-performance products, and we are proud to continue
that rich tradition by providing robust components for the SRT-10,"
said Bill Carroll, president of Dana's Automotive Systems Group.
"Dana's extensive knowledge and experience will ensure our axles,
driveshafts, and other components deliver extraordinary performance
while enduring the extreme demands presented by this unique truck."
Prior to appearing on the SRT-10, previous versions of Dana's Model
60 axles drove Chrysler Group's legendary Barracudas, Challengers,
Chargers, and Road Runners in the late 1960s and early '70s. Even
before the muscle car era, the early Model 60 axles established a
solid track record beginning in the 1950s. Dana Corporation is a
