Since 2000 ENDESA (NYSE: ELE) subsidiary SNET has invested over
Euro 5 million in a variety of measures designed to reduce noise
pollution and particle emissions. The investment will extend the
useful life of the plant, improve health and safety conditions on
the site and enhance the quality of the environment in its
surroundings. The measures, which will continue into 2006, are part
of SNET's Plan for the Environment and Sustainable Development
initiated several years ago and which has been reinforced since
ENDESA acquired a stake in the French group. Measures implemented
to reduce noise pollution In 2002 a campaign was carried out to
measure noise levels in the areas surrounding the plant and a study
made to determine the source of this noise. As a result of this
study, the 2005-2006 Action Plan was drawn up, with a budget of
Euro 1.2 million. The aim of the plan is to treat the main sources
of noise pollution at the main and auxiliary power facilities. As
part of this investment, on September 2, 2005 a silencer was
installed on the roof of the boiler in a spectacular helicopter
operation in order to reduce the noise produced by steam traps.
Also, several measures have been implemented to reduce noise in the
plant's groups, mainly by improving the performance of the
silencers on the steam taps and replacing steam ejectors with steam
pumps. Measures implemented to reduce dust particles Several
measures have been implemented to treat dust particles so treating
emissions at source. These include: In 2002 a device was installed
to measure dust particles around the coal store - this device had
an eight point scale. Thirteen industrial water cannons were also
installed to ensure the surface irrigation of most of the coal
store. Also, semi automatic sprinklers have been installed all
along the plant's road network at a cost of Euro 202,000. The
irrigation of the coal store will be fully automatic by the end of
2005. A new underground unloading bay for trucks with water
sprinkling systems has also been installed in the coal store. This
started operating on September 1, 2005, and cost Euro 2.2 million.
Another hopper is to be constructed underneath the building
completing the truck unloading facility by early 2006 at a cost of
Euro 505,000. In April 2005 a high pressure sprinkler system was
installed at a cost of Euro 90, 000 designed to prevent the dust
produced by the bucket wheel excavator from rising. The vehicles
and road network within the plant have also been thoroughly
cleaned. Now all tanker trucks transporting power plant ash are
washed before leaving the area. In January 2005 a facility was
constructed to wash the wheels and chassis of all trucks leaving
the coal store. Lastly, the frequency with which the road network
is cleaned varies according to climate conditions with an annual
cost of Euro 80,000. * This document may contain certain
