OTTAWA, CANADA (NYSE: ZL) today announced that according to data gathered from a recent CableLabs report, all digital voice cable modem products that have been certified to the latest DOCSIS3.0 specification, utilize the Zarlink voice solution. This list of products includes major industry leaders and emphasizes the broad reach this certification has in the industry.

With more than fifty million voice lines shipped into the digital cable modem market over the last three years, Zarlink looks to continue its market leadership. To put this into perspective, Infonetics estimates that over 100 million lines will be shipped over the next three years, most of which must be certified through DOCSIS. The cable industry is today moving to upgrade to new platforms capable of 160 Mb/s downstream and 120 Mb/s upstream to compete with fiber's 100 Mb/s downstream and 100 Mb/s upstream. With these improvements cable providers can deliver faster internet, better voice services and a broader digital television experience, all over an existing infrastructure.

"Zarlink's voice product line is the incumbent market leader in the digital voice cable market," said Bert Baker, marketing manager with Zarlink Semiconductor. "This leadership should grow as voice functionality continues to be added to cable equipment and the more robust DOCSIS3.0 is brought to the market."

The Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) developed by CableLabs has served as the defacto definition within the industry for communications and operations support requirements. First introduced in 1997, the DOCSIS specification has continued to evolve as network speeds have increased, thus enabling new applications such as VoIP and digital television to expand.
