LOS ANGELES, Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The Los Angeles Times has
named Charles McNulty as theater critic, it was announced today by
John Montorio, deputy managing editor for features. McNulty, who
assumes his position in December, currently is a senior editor at
the Village Voice, where he oversees its theater, television and
entertainment coverage. He joined the Village Voice in 1992. His
theater writing also has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, The New
York Times, American Theater magazine, Theater magazine and
Variety. "After a lengthy and exhaustive search of theater critics
across the country, we're confident Charles McNulty is the best
person for the job," said Montorio. "Charles brings to the position
more than just a good academic and professional background in the
theater, though that was important of course. He is a critic with
passion about theater, with catholic tastes and an understanding of
the world outside Broadway, which will be especially key in
covering Los Angeles' lively theater scene." McNulty is chairman of
the Obie Awards, the off-Broadway theater equivalent to the Tony
Awards. He also heads the M.F.A. program in dramaturgy and theater
criticism at Brooklyn College, and has taught theater courses at
Yale University, New York University and The New School in New York
City. His production experience includes six seasons as literary
manager/dramaturge at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, N.J., one
of the nation's major nonprofit performing arts institutes. In
addition, he has worked at the Yale Repertory Theater and interned
with the New York Shakespeare Festival. A native of Brooklyn,
McNulty earned a master's degree in dramatic writing and literature
from New York University, where he also received a bachelor's
degree from the Stern School of Business. He also graduated from
the Yale University School of Drama, where he earned master's and
doctorate degrees in dramaturgy and dramatic criticism. The Los
Angeles Times, a Tribune Publishing company, is the largest
metropolitan daily newspaper in the country and the winner of 37
Pulitzer Prizes, including two this year. The Times publishes five
