JUPITER, Fla., Oct. 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- RenuEn
Corporation (OTCPINK:RENU) today filed a federal lawsuit in
response to a multi-month, widespread and detrimental online
defamation campaign waged against it by a competitor and a group of
individuals who are believed to be intending to profit from the
campaign. The defamation campaign also included the
unauthorized access of the Coral
Springs Police Department's official Facebook and Twitter
pages, where false and unsubstantiated fraud alerts were
posted. Police removed the posts after RenuEn executives
brought them to their attention. The police department has
since acknowledged that the posts were not authorized and that it
was not investigating RenuEn.
"We appreciate the police department's initial assistance in
this matter," said Jeff Nemes, CEO
of RenuEn. "However, before the post was deleted, it was
shared extensively online and in countless fake posts on consumer
review sites. These posts, in addition to the other
defamatory statements made as part of this campaign, have caused
significant damage to our company, its shareholders and our
business partners."
RenuEn is represented by Whitney C.
Gibson, a partner at Ohio-based law firm Vorys, Sater, Seymour and
Pease LLP. Mr. Gibson leads the firm's internet defamation
group. The extent of the online defamation campaign is
outlined in the complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the
Middle District of Florida. Follow the links below to read
the full details and download a copy of the complaint.
According to the complaint, the defamation made against RenuEn
began in July, shortly after the company ended a relationship with
America's Green Energy Source (AGES) and AGES commenced plans to
compete with RenuEn. AGES and its owner, John L. Lameira, are named as defendants in the
lawsuit.
The complaint also names as defendants Cathy Lerman, a Coral
Springs, Florida attorney, and her husband, Steve Lerman, a Coral
Springs police detective. The complaint alleges that
Cathy Lerman exchanged extensive
communications concerning RenuEn with Lameira and posted several
untrue and derogatory posts online about RenuEn. According to
the complaint, it is also believed that Steve Lerman caused the false police fraud alert
to be posted on the Coral Springs
police department's official Facebook and Twitter pages. The
police postings are currently being investigated by the
Coral Springs Police Internal
Affairs Unit.
The defamation campaign, the lawsuit states, includes as many as
11 fictional posts made to Ripoff Report (an online review website)
and countless other online statements made on sites such as Twitter
and pissedconsumer.com.
