LONDON--Smiths Group PLC (SMIN.LN) Thursday said it will buy California-based detection and security business Morpho Detection from French aviation and defense company SAFRAN SA (SAF.FR) for $710 million.

The U.K. technolony company said Morpho Detection will be merged with it detection division, which makes scanners for airports and other security products.
