Appointment of new director
Glas Cymru, the not-for-profit owner of Dwr Cymru Welsh Water,
the water company serving Wales, announces that Menna Richards is
today joining the Board of Glas Cymru Cyfyngedig and Dwr Cymru
Cyfyngedig as a non-executive director.
Menna has been a leading figure in broadcasting in Wales for
more than 20 years. For the last ten years she has led BBC Cymru
Wales, first as Controller, now as Director. Under her leadership
Wales has become home to some of the BBC's great television
successes of recent years including Doctor Who, Torchwood, Sherlock
and Last Chance To See. The creative transformation overseen by
Menna includes the opening of BBC Hoddinott Hall, a new home for
the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and next summer will see the
opening of a new drama production centre in Cardiff Bay.
Menna will step down from the BBC in February 2011. During her
career she has been involved with a number of bodies including as
chairman of the Board of Governors of the Royal Welsh College of
Music and Drama and as a Board member of the Cardiff Bay
Development Corporation. She recently joined the board of Welsh
National Opera.
Menna was awarded the OBE in 2010 for services to
broadcasting.
Menna said: "I'm delighted to be joining the board of Glas
Cymru. I've long admired the work they do and as an organisation it
embodies many of the things I believe in passionately, including a
commitment to provide a first class public service to the people of
Wales."
Robert Ayling, Chairman of Glas Cymru, said: "Menna brings to
our Board a wealth of experience in running organisations where
customer service is paramount. She has a very strong track record
in managing complex businesses and in leading organisational
change, something particularly important for Dwr Cymru as we
continue to transform the business. Menna also brings a deep
understanding and appreciation of Wales, which is essential given
the importance of the public service Dwr Cymru delivers to the
customers and communities we serve."
Menna will be a member of the Audit and Nomination Committees of
the Board and will also represent the Board on the independent
Membership Selection Panel, which recommends individuals for
appointment as Members of Glas Cymru. She will stand for election
as a Director at the 2011 Annual General Meeting of Glas Cymru.
