VAAL REEFS EXPLORATION AND MINING COMPANY LIMITED ("VAAL REEFS")

In our capacity as London Secretaries to Vaal Reefs we wish to advise you, as
required by chapter 17, paragraph 33(b) of the 'Listing Rules', that during
the week ended 3 October 1997 Vaal Reefs became aware of the following
reportable changes to shareholdings. These changes are as a result of the
decision to transfer shares from the names of nominee holders into the names
of the beneficial holders.

Resident Nominees Limited decreased from 11.93% to Nil

Anglo American Gold Investment Company Limited increased from below 5% to
19.06%.
