American Express Company ("Amex") - notice of intention to cancel the listing of 
its "Common Shares $0.20 Par Value".

Amex hereby announces, in accordance with the requirement set out in paragraph 
5.2.8 of the Listing Rules, that the Corporation will today notify the UK Listing 
Authority that it wishes to cancel the listing on the Official List of the 
outstanding Common Shares $0.20 Par Value in compliance with the required minimum 
20 business days' notice of intended cancellation made through a Regulatory 
Information Service. In the meantime, trading in the outstanding Common Shares 
$0.20 Par Value will continue on normal market basis until the cancellation of 
the listing. Amex intends that, with effect from October 9, 2007, the listing of 
the Common Shares $0.20 Par Value on the Official List and its trading on the 
London Stock Exchange plc's market for listed securities will be terminated.
