          Lodwrick M. Cook Retires from ARCO Board of Directors

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 11/PRNewswire/-- Lodwrick M. Cook has elected to retire from
ARCO's (NYSE:ARC) Board of Directors, effective December 31, it was announced
today by ARCO Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mike R. Bowlin.

Cook, 69, has been a Board member since 1980.  He was Chairman of the Board from
1986-1995.  Cook was also ARCO's Chief Executive Officer from 1985 to 1994, when
he retired after almost 40 years of service with the company.  

"Lod's contributions to ARCO's growth and success -- both as an officer and
Director -- have been enormous," said Bowlin.  "His wise counsel will be missed
by all of us on the Board.  We wish him every success."
