Following the recent movement in British Steel's share price, the Boards of
British Steel plc and Koninklijke Hoogovens NV confirm that they are in
discussions regarding a possible merger of the two companies.  It is
anticipated that any merger would be accompanied by a return of value to
British Steel shareholders.

It is expected that a detailed announcement will be made no later than Monday,
7 June 1999.
