It is intended to complete the proposed merger between British Steel plc and
Koninklijke Hoogovens in the Autumn. Mr. Harold Homer and Mr. John McDowall
are fully supportive of the merger and it had been the intention to offer them
Executive positions in the new Company. In the event both have indicated their
intention to leave British Steel at the end of December 1999 and their
decisions have been reluctantly accepted by the Board of British Steel.

Mr. Homer will be aged 59 and will have over 42 years service, Mr. McDowall
will be aged 57 and will have over 32 years of service. Both were appointed as
Executive Directors on to the Board of British Steel plc in 1992.
