Italy's competition watchdog on Friday said it has opened an investigation into whether Enel SpA abused its dominant position in the electric-mobility sector.

According to the Italian Competition Authority, or AGCM, Enel X Way Srl, Enel X Way Italia Srl and Ewiva Srl--a joint venture between Enel X Way and Volkswagen AG--may have engaged in anticompetitive behavior against competitors active in the provision of electric-charging services.

The authority said it carried out inspections in the offices of the three companies on Thursday.

Enel said Enel X Way and Enel X Way Italia have always acted in full compliance with rules. "The companies are confident they will be able to demonstrate the full legitimacy and correctness of their actions," the utility said.
