Air Liquide to Apply Low-Carbon Hydrogen Technology in Japan

Air Liquide SA on Tuesday said that its autothermal-reforming
technology has been selected for the production of low-carbon
hydrogen and ammonia in Japan, in what will be a first
demonstration in the country.
The French industrial-gases company said its technology will be
applied to a pilot project owned and operated by Japanese
oil-and-gas exploration and production company Inpex Corp. in
combination with carbon capture.
Autothermal reforming is a process by which hydrogen can be
extracted at scale from natural gas after it is converted into
synthetic gas through the application of pure oxygen, steam and
high temperature. The synthetic gas can also be converted into
other chemicals including ammonia and methanol, Air Liquide
said.
When combined with carbon-capture technology, the process can
enable the capture of up to 99% of carbon emissions in integrated
facilities, the company said.
Air Liquide's engineering and construction unit will supply the
technology to the Kashiwazaki Clean Hydrogen and Ammonia Project in
Japan's Niigata prefecture, Air Liquide said.
