Mobile World Congress -- MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:MIPS), a
leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and
cores, and Intrinsyc Software International, Inc. (TSX:ICS), a
leading provider of software solutions for mobile devices, today
announced they are working together to bring 3.5G functionality to
the MIPS® architecture. The companies are porting Intrinsyc's
RapidRIL software to the MIPS architecture in order to accelerate
mobile SoC development for MIPS licensees around the globe. At the
upcoming Mobile World Congress being held February 15-18 in
Barcelona, the companies plan to demonstrate 3.5G voice calls with
audio and video playback on a MIPS-Based™ Android™ platform.
"Intrinsyc is widely known as a key mobile software solutions
provider, and we are pleased to work with them to make 3.5G
telephony on MIPS a reality," said Art Swift, vice president of
marketing, MIPS Technologies. "Developing these software stacks is
key to enabling our customers to bring mobile products to market
fast. Thanks to our 'Android on MIPS' initiative and MIPS
Technologies' compelling performance/power consumption advantages,
a wide range of companies will now be able to quickly and
cost-effectively build enhanced 3G mobile functionality into their
devices."
"We are delighted to join the MIPS Alliance Program and work
closely with MIPS Technologies to develop optimized mobile
solutions for MIPS," said David Manuel, vice president and general
manager, Device Development Solutions at Intrinsyc. "With the
combination of the Android platform and MIPS Technologies' strength
in consumer electronics, this relationship has far reaching
promise. The optimized solution has the potential to bring 3.5G
functionality to a number of devices such as ebook readers,
personal and automotive navigation devices, portable media players,
mobile internet devices (MIDs), digital photo frames and
smartphones."
MIPS Technologies has long been known as the embedded processor
leader in digital home products. The company is now leveraging its
leadership position in high-performance processing for multimedia
and networking applications, as well as its 'Android on MIPS'
initiative, to expand into other high-growth markets such as mobile
products. MIPS Technologies already has a number of wins in the
mobile infrastructure market including femtocells, cellular
basestations, WiMAX and upcoming LTE client and basestation
designs. The company's processors are also used as co-processors in
3G cellphones.
