After delivering the world�s first direct conversion tuner to the market, Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE:FSL)�(NYSE:FSL.B) announces that it has shipped more than one million units of its digital video broadcasting-handheld (DVB-H) tuner. The Freescale tuners are part of a front-end reference design providing DVB-H connectivity in a wide variety of consumer products. The DVB-H tuner uses 270 mW during bursts, representing half the power of traditional tuners with a much smaller bill of materials. Additionally, Freescale�s DVB-H tuner has enhanced sensitivity allowing consumers to receive quality service even in fringe areas of coverage, a critical requirement for DVB-H applications. �By the end of the decade, mobile TV capability will become prevalent in many devices such as cellular handsets, PMPs, PDAs, notebook PCs and other consumer devices,� said Kent Heath, director of Freescale�s Radio Products Division. �Having actively participated in the development of the Mobile Broadband Radio Air Interface (MBRAI) specification, Freescale is shipping DVB-H tuners that enable leading OEMs to make mobile DTV a reality.� Developed for cell phones, PMPs and handheld TV applications, the DVB-H standard builds on existing DVB-T infrastructure to reach wide coverage with limited incremental investments. This allows cellular handsets to receive Internet Protocol data from the network while a cellular uplink is used as a return channel for data and interactive applications. DVB-H is a perfect complement to 2G and 3G cellular networks, providing the high bandwidth necessary to implement broadcast solutions.
