For 2013, the Defense Security Service (DSS) awarded three DRS
facilities, including its corporate headquarters in Arlington, Va., that exemplify the eminent
principles of industrial security and exceed U.S. Department of
Defense requirements. This is the first time DRS Technologies
has been recognized for this significant achievement.
The James S. Cogswell Award was
established in 1966 and is the most prestigious citation for a
cleared facility that demonstrates security excellence and a proven
history of substantial compliance by a cleared facility over
multiple years. The award is historically earned by less than
one percent of the nation's more than 13,000 eligible cleared
defense contractor facilities.
The three Cogswell Awards come on the heels of DRS recently
receiving the highest U.S. honor for protecting classified
information and technology when in April
2013 the company was presented with the Defense Security
Service Award for Excellence in Counterintelligence.
This is the first time a company operating under a Proxy
Agreement has been given the Award for Excellence in
Counterintelligence and the Cogswell Award in the same year.
DSS Director Stanley L. Sims said
DRS Technologies earned the three Cogswell Awards this year because
of the company's commitment to setting and meeting high levels of
security performance on a consistent basis.
"Establishing and maintaining a security program that goes well
beyond the minimum National Industrial Security Program
requirements, while providing security leadership to its cleared
facilities reflects DRS's superior commitment to sustaining secure
and vigilant operations around the country," Sims said.
This year, just 25 defense industry facilities from more than
13,000 around the United States,
were recognized by DSS for the Cogswell Award. The DRS teams
recognized by DSS for this award were the Corporate Security Team
in Arlington, Va., the Network and
Imaging Systems Team in West Melbourne,
Fla. and the Network and Imaging Systems Team in
Dallas, Texas.
DRS President and CEO and former U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary,
William J. Lynn said maintaining
secure industrial defense facilities is an essential responsibility
for every company within the defense industry. "The men and
women of the U.S. military rely on industry to ensure its
facilities rival the stringent security levels of military
installations in order to safeguard our uniformed personnel as they
defend us around the world," Lynn said.
Defense Security Service Industrial Security Field Operations
personnel are responsible for evaluating defense contractors'
compliance with establishing and maintaining a security program
that far exceeds the basic National Industrial Security Program
requirements. The Cogswell Award selection process is
rigorous. Nominations only go to facilities that have a
minimum two consecutive superior industrial security review ratings
and show a sustained degree of excellence and innovation in their
overall security program management, implementation and
oversight.
