Mercedes-Benz Group said Friday that it has received certification from California state authorities for a driving system that is automated under limited conditions.

The German luxury car maker said its Drive Pilot system is a Level 3 self-driving technology under SAE International--formerly the Society of Automotive Engineers--standards. This means the automated function takes over certain driving tasks, but a driver is still required and needs to be ready to take control of the vehicle at all times.

The system will be available in the U.S. for Mercedes-Benz's S-Class and EQS Sedan models, with the first cars delivered to customers in late 2023, the company said.

Mercedes‑Benz said it aims to expand availability of this system to additional markets in the future.
