DOUBLE DELIGHT FOR DATA CENTRE MANAGEMENT PIONEERS

XpedITe, RiT Tech’s revolutionary approach to data centre infrastructure management, is continuing to earn rave reviews and recognition from industry insiders.

The cutting-edge Universal Intelligent Infrastructure Management solution secured a hotly-contested double at this year’s DCS Awards, which celebrates the achievements of businesses serving the global data centre sector and attracted nominations from hundreds of suppliers.

XpedITe was crowned Data Centre Intelligent Automation and Management Innovation of the Year and – for a second time in succession – Data Centre ICT Automation/Orchestration Innovation of the Year during the high-profile prize-giving ceremony in London.

The dual success follows the announcement that RiT Tech’s transformative technology has attracted financial backing from the Israel Innovation Authority that will be used to further advance its intelligent automation and predictive planning capabilities.

Powered by advanced algorithms and developed to remove operational blind spots from a data centre’s topology by capturing the role of every asset and its inter-dependencies, XpedITe already affords users a real-time, 360-degree view of their operations.

A significant step change from the monitoring capabilities of other Data Centre Infrastructure Management tools, it can plan installations and forecast risks, automate ongoing processes and operational workflows as well as manage the lifecycle of assets and resource utilisation.

Reflecting on the accolades received by XpedITe, RiT Tech CEO Assaf Sklonik said: “We are delighted to have been recognised by our peers – the DCS titles represent a reward for the team’s hard work and will to challenge convention.

“At RiT Tech we are on a mission to positively change the industries we operate in, to help make them more efficient for the benefit of society as a whole and these two awards are an endorsement that we remain firmly on track.”

A NEW DAWN FOR DCIM?

“It takes many good deeds to build a good reputation, and only one bad one to lose it.”

As one of the United States’ founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin may not be the most contemporary of reference points but his sage appraisal of the fragility of social standing still holds plenty of stock today.

Good news for those associated with unblemished brands, damning for those in the business of Data Centre Infrastructure Management (DCIM) – a much-maligned capability that has a decade’s worth of disappointment, rather than a single blot, on its copybook.

Mis-marketed, mis-sold and misunderstood, DCIM is frequently spoken of in derisory terms by industry insiders as a consequence of a substantial legacy of ineffective deployments, despite the concept being based on sound principles.

There is, however, a very real requirement for a Lazarus-style reputational recovery – for the loathed to become loved and mocked to become marvelled.

Data centres – and the sprawling IT estates they house – are becoming increasingly complex and hybrid in nature, which makes their effective management a feat far beyond the means of mere spreadsheets and asset registers.

The coronavirus pandemic has also given cause to reconsider the merits of deploying DCIM systems.

With sites sealed due to social-distancing measures and major restrictions on travel put in place during lockdowns, some data centres were not readily accessible to the humans carrying clipboards and manual management tools which are often relied on to sustain the healthy operations of facilities and cabling infrastructure.

Given the direction of travel within the sector is very much towards dark sites and the Edge, improved technology will soon be a necessity rather than a nice to have. Operators will need remote access to a single source of truth that considers the management, connectivity and automation of every element of the data centre ecosystem.

Whether or not reputations can be repaired remains to be seen, but stereotypes can shift and suppliers of fit-for-purpose DCIM systems should be buoyed by the example of a sector driving data centre capacity extension.

Rewind to the start of the current century and the term “gamer” conjured images of teenagers shunning natural light and social interaction in favour of fervent button bashing in their bedrooms.

Today, time in front of a console is as far removed as possible from being a solitary experience with people joining online games to actively mix with a global family of 2.8 billion people and powering an industry worth more than $175 billion.

Gaming has become a social monster and is community driven to the extent that people even enjoy watching others play – as evidenced by the professionalisation of e-sports and the millions who tune in to watch live-streamed finals.

Significant advancements in technology, specifically the sophistication of computer networks and speed of sharing data, have been at the spearhead of this reinvention and DCIM can follow suit.

There are now new players in the game with the ability to leapfrog legacy systems in terms of providing cheaper and easier to install systems that are dramatically less resource intensive from the human perspective.

The penny has also dropped that the “management” element of the DCIM moniker is critical and there is a general acceptance that tools which simply monitor are continuing to miss the point.

Optimising a data centre’s performance, mitigating downtime, driving efficiencies and planning for the future all require the mining of multiple data sets for the benefit of multiple stakeholders and consequently savvy suppliers, such as automation specialist RiT Tech, have brought interoperability to the fore.

An effective DCIM needs to act as the glue to bind a data centre’s many component parts and therefore augment – and not replace – specialist tools already in place through smart but quick to configure APIs.

Ultimately, perceptions will only be changed through positive experiences and the recent demise of Vertiv’s Trellis DCIM demonstrates the scale of the challenge at hand.

RiT Tech, however, remains undeterred from its mission to distance itself from DCIM’s dark past and plans to define a brighter future with its next-generation solution, XpedITe.

While Franklin’s words continue to ring true, RiT Tech have also noted those of Amazon founder and multi-billionaire Jeff Bezos… “you earn reputation by trying to do hard things well”.

7 myths about DCIM you need to know as an I&O leader

RiT Tech's Reality Check: 7 myths about DCIM you need to know
as an I&O leader

Elvis is not alive, the moon landings weren’t faked and Bill Gates is not using Covid-19 vaccines to implant tracking microchips into the world’s population. All in agreement so far? Okay, then time to tackle some of the perpetual untruths that circle Data Centre Infrastructure Management (DCIM) – a field that has become full of falsehoods as a consequence of more than a decade of mis-pitched promises and a legacy of ineffective deployments.

At RiT Tech, we are in the business of reality and hope our seven sanity checks below help to dispel some of the widely held myths that muddy the name of a capability based on sound ideology.

1. Myth: Picking up a proficient DCIM is as simple as procuring any other ‘run-of-the-mill’ software solution.

Reality: If you’re looking for a simple, shrink-wrapped product that can be bought off the shelf and slung quickly into action, it’s time to call off your search. Contrary to the marketing spiel and slick sales pitches surrounding some offerings, there isn’t a company on the planet that has the full suite of tools that can deliver all that a DCIM should. There are products and services that address parts of a data centre’s complex operations but not all of them. Plug-and-play is not an option – a tailored toolset that complements and integrates with, rather than replaces legacy systems, is the only solution.

2. Myth: If a DCIM monitors, that is all that is needed.

Reality: “Watching” the inner workings of a data centre is all well and good, but insights need to be actionable. Unfortunately, in many cases the “management” aspect of the DCIM moniker is largely missing from marketed solutions and the disconnect between oversight of building facilities and computing, storage and networking equipment is alarming. Monitoring systems in isolation fall short of the mark – a DCIM should provide a single source of truth in real-time while focusing on the management, connectivity and automation of every element of the data centre ecosystem. The clue to a DCIM’s key capability really is in its name. Merely collecting data is pointless if it is not converted into useful management information.

3. Myth: DCIM applications are merely Building Management Systems (BMS) for data centres.

Reality: Do you know of a BMS that can interrogate a data centre’s IT stack and accurately map and track every cable and connection down to the last portal? Didn’t think so. A decent DCIM will augment a facility’s BMS – merging metrics from power and cooling systems with those of the data networks to supply both IT and facility managers with the insights they need to optimise performance, maximise capacity utilisation and evade unnecessary downtime. A strong connection and seamless communication between the two areas of operation are paramount.

4. Myth: Implementing a DCIM based on proprietary hardware is the way forward.

Reality: If you misguidedly want a system wilfully blinkered to anything beyond its own corporate collateral, then perhaps so. However, such an electronic ecosystem simply does not exist in a data centre and consequently a DCIM should be a central cog – albeit an important one – in a grander, well-oiled machine. The need to interact and integrate with other vendors’ hardware and software is imperative if optimal efficiency is to be achieved. Rather than attempting to be the entire ecosystem, a DCIM should supplement and interface with existing capabilities – not replace them.

5. Myth: A DCIM only needs to reference a subset of an enterprise to be effective and worth the investment.

Reality: When flying, would you be happy for a pilot to only consult a fraction of an airplane cockpit’s instruments before take-off? If so, let’s hope you’re not responsible for providing safe carriage to customers’ digital services and data. Decisions, in all walks of life, should be based on all of the evidence available and especially so in a data centre, where a misinformed step can be an extremely expensive one. Consequently, a DCIM should aspire to be the technological equivalent of a top surgeon – referencing every element of a data centre’s health before making any kind of incision. A snapshot of an IT stack is of little use if a blind eye has been turned to the information provided from other quarters of the data centre ecosystem, such as available power and cooling capacity and billing systems.

6. Myth: You don’t need to bother with a DCIM solution. A detailed spreadsheet is a sufficient substitute.

Reality: It is indicative of the disdain felt towards the DCIM acronym that its technologies are largely shunned in favour of simplistic – and significantly cheaper – software programmes or off the shelf tools. However, just because Microsoft Excel is the most widely used solution it does not mean that it is fit for purpose. A standalone spreadsheet, little more than a glorified asset register, populated and maintained by an individual falls far short of the functionality needed to drive efficiencies in a data centre. A complex problem requires a more complex and comprehensive solution.

7. Myth: Implementing a DCIM is a fire-and-forget mission.

A one-time, short set-up that solves the conundrum of keeping operating costs down, maximising resource utilisation, ensuring customer satisfaction and maintaining optimal performance levels sounds like a dream – and that’s because it is. DCIM implementation is a programme not a standalone project and is necessarily so as forging a single source of truth can’t be done in the snap of a finger. A data centre’s activity and occupancy ebb and flow and – whether an enterprise, edge, colocation or geographically-dispersed operation – its component parts evolve. In turn, a DCIM must develop with its surroundings and embrace change and be given the ongoing care and attention needed to do so.

RIT TECH'S TRAILBLAZING USE OF INTELLIGENT AUTOMATION CHAMPIONED BY ISRAEL INNOVATION AUTHORITY

A RiT Tech project using transformative technology to futureproof the infrastructure management of data centres has received financial backing from the Israel Innovation Authority (IIA)

The funding award will help the Kfar Saba-based business to evolve and enhance XpedITe – a Universal Intelligent Infrastructure Management solution it has developed to provide data centre managers with intelligent automation and predictive insight and planning capabilities.

RiT Tech’s revolutionary approach to removing any operational blind spots from a data centre’s topology by capturing the role of every asset and its inter-dependencies is powered by advanced algorithms and enables predictions-based provisioning to be exploited by site operators.

Affording users a real-time, 360-degree view of their operations, XpedITe can plan installations and forecast risks, automate ongoing processes and operational workflows as well as manage the lifecycle of assets and a data centre’s resource utilisation.

Jeff Safovich, chief technology officer at RiT Tech, said the IIA’s endorsement of XpedITe demonstrated the system’s promise.

“The process for securing IIA funding is extremely competitive and such recognition is only awarded to those businesses breaking new ground using new and emerging technologies.

“To be recognised as being pioneers in the data sector domain is fantastic and is an acknowledgement that our Universal Intelligent Infrastructure Management solution has the potential to transform the industry.

“Rather than focusing on just one aspect of a data centre like other products, XpedITe considers every element of an environment – no matter how expansive – and this improved visibility makes attaining optimal performance much easier.

“It is a breakthrough that delivers super efficiencies while helping to reduce the total cost of ownership and is comparable to the transformative impact the introduction of optimisation techniques has had on the aviation industry.

“In an intensely competitive market, those airlines using technology to understand and unpick the complexities of scheduling, juggling connections, assigning crew, bad weather and passenger bookings have a distinct advantage.

“XpedITe can do the same for data centres by providing a clear view of what’s over the horizon.”

The Open Platform Colloquium Event - November 7, 2019
Orchestrating the Software-Defined Data Center
On Thurs 7th November, RiT held the first of a series of thought leadership events in London. The format is called the Open Platform Colloquium, and is intended to gather experts, stakeholders, end-users and vendors together to discuss a current issue, and investigate practical ways that companies can make progress.

The first subject was “Orchestrating the Software-defined Data Center”(SDDC), and was co-hosted by Intel DCM, and sponsored by ExcelRedstone and
PTS Consulting, who all presented. After the presentations, there was a lively debate, which will guide resulting publications from the event.

Some of the key take aways were as follows:
• DCIM is necessary for smooth operations of complex environments such as an SDDC
• A full DCIM implementation requires stakeholder involvement from around the business
• Leaders are working to fix the reputation of DCIM as it is evolving and its scope is widening
• A new name for DCIM? Data center, Network & Infrastructure Orchestration (DNIO) is RiT’s progressive offering called XpedITe
• Accuracy of data is critical, using big data is important
• Real time data is critical for successful operations
• DCIM/DNIO is not an "Off the shelf" product – it requires integration work as well as configuration of processes

The next Open Platform Colloquium will be announced shortly.

$RITT: PTL Group assisted the NEW RiTTech in China

PTL Group provides international companies with diverse management and operation services in China. We help to stabilize business infrastructures, reduce expenditures, tighten risk control and shorten time-to-market. Having an in-house experienced team of experts on the ground in China for almost two decades has proved highly valuable for our clients.

https://www.ptl-group.com/an-interesting-story-of-an-international-company-in-the-chinese-market/

*********************************************************

An interview with Assaf Skolnik – RIT Tech CEO, who led former RIT activities in China and its acquisition by a Chinese corporation.
RIT Technologies specializes in advanced communication infrastructure to organizational computer rooms, and offers hardware and software solutions. RIT was established in 1989 by the Zispel brothers as part of the Rad-Bynet Group. In 1997 it turned into a public company when it was first publicly issued at NASDAQ and in 2008 the control core was sold to the Russian Stins Coman Group. Recently’ the company’s activities and assets were purchased by the world largest optic fiber company YOFC. At its prime at NASDAQ, RIT was traded at a market cap of over $50 million.

When and how did you enter to China?
“Our Chinese activity started at 2005. At first, we managed our business through Representative Office but it limited us in many ways, since we used international distributors and OEM and did not sell our products directly to local distributors or to the end clients. We faced two challenges by working in China through Rep. Office:

Our work was restricted to distributors with an import licensed, while the majority of the market is composed by local distributors without that license, which we could not work with.
Without a local company, we could not manufacture in China and directly sell it locally. We had to manufacture in China, ship the goods out of China and then sell it to China”

2015 – RIT Begin to work with PTL Group in China
“In order to cope with both challenges, I led, as the company’s VP of sales, toward signing services agreements with PTL Group. The first agreement was a logistic one: local distributors purchase from PTL Group, and PTL Group, as a Chinese company buys from us in our home-country. The second agreement was offices and HR. We realized that a Representative office in China (RO) added no value to us, so we closed it and employed our staff through PTL Group. We used their services and were able to open offices utilizing their platform, both in Shanghai and in Beijing.”

Later we wanted to expand our activities with PTL Group and make them our local manufacturing representative in China. Unfortunately, we did not sign an agreement due to financial cash flow difficulties and $10 million debt of our previous controlling shareholder (Stins Coman Group). In order to save the company’s activities we had to go to a liquidation process.”

2016 – RIT purchased by world largest optic fiber company – Chinese YOFC
One of the companies who expressed an interest in buying RIT and its assets was YOFC – the world largest fiber optic company. Eventually, YOFC did purchase RIT and its operations.

We established a new company named RIT Tech. during 2016 we bought from RIT’s liquidator its assets, brand and IP. RIT Tech also bought RIT’s Chinese business operations. By the end of 2016, we finished the acquisition process”. According to press publications, this was YOFC’s first investment in Israel, and was part of a broad strategy of entering the Israeli market. Skolnik states that “the company under my leadership will remain Israeli but would expand its global activities”.

Chinese market entry and expansion
Assaf skolnik – who previously managed the RIT’s Chinese operations and is currently the RIT Tech’s CEO emphasizes that “Our interface with PTL Group helped us to enter the Chinese market and expand our activities, as we were able to interact with new target audiences and business partners that were previously out of reach. In addition, we were able to employ our personnel in China in a more convenient fashion. PTL Group team provided us with above-and-beyond professional service.”

“The Chinese market is a dominant market for us at RIT Tech and we plan to continue our operations there and expand it. As a result of us being purchased by Chinese YOFC we will receive its economic support locally as well its technological, operational, manufactural and sales support”.

Crisis management – A few points from PTL Groups’ perspective
While working with RIT we, at PTL Group, faced tough challenges.

First – closing the Rep. Office was extremely complicated. Since it is easy and fast, many companies are tempted to open a Rep. Office in China. But people are not aware of the costs that are involved in having a Rep. Office, its tax requirements and especially the enormous complexity of closing a Rep. Office. The process of closing a Rep. Office like RITs’ took over 18 months.

Second – working with a company during its liquidation process highly tested our abilities, but also emphasized the true advantages of PTL Group – that shine through crisis. When RIT entered liquidation, PTL Group was at the front – facing RIT’s Chinese staff that was employed by PTL Group. PTL Group could not wait to Israeli court decisions. It had to take care of those employees in China and get them the legal Chinese salaries and compensations.

Additionally, PTL Group had to deal with a distributor that was waiting for the arrival of RIT goods. Here, as well, PTL Group was in the middle – as the entity who signed the contract with him. PTL Group Chinese management team worked relentlessly to solve the crisis and have all parties satisfied without using courts.

At the end of the project we, at PTL Group, felt content. We have learned, again, that the qualities of our services are best measured at a time of crisis, not when everything is calm, but rather when our clients need all of our experience and all the managerial knowledge that was accumulated with our professional managers. Those are the times that create case studies worth sharing.

In spite of the difficulties, it is important to note that we had full and positive cooperation from both sides; from the minute we were informed that liquidation is necessary until the end of that process, suffering minimum damage. We are grateful to Asaff for working with us and wish him a great success at the Chinese market as well as at the global market with the new RIT Tech.

$RITT: RiT Launches DNIO

www.datacentre.me/news/rit-tech-launch-dnio-the-metamorphosis-of-dcim-10613.htm

RIT TECH LAUNCH DNIO: THE METAMORPHOSIS OF DCIM
INDUSTRY NEWS: 18 July 2019

PRESS RELEASE: Tel Aviv, Israel: Leveraging their extensive experience in providing converged IT infrastructure management and intelligent connectivity solutions, RiT Tech are showcasing DNIO (Datacentre, Network & Infrastructure Orchestration). The full-stack, open-framework solution that takes the Data Centre Infrastructure Management (DCIM) concept to its metamorphosis, capable of delivering higher levels of business agility.

“We’re very excited to offer our DNIO Platform, XpedITe to the market. It is our proprietary offering but has an open-framework that can connect to legacy systems, as well as new. We offer unlimited integration, with a powerful work order and workflow capability, which together offer the highest levels of operational efficiency possible in the data centre. Our customers particularly like the GUI and ease of use.” Said Assaf Skolnik, CEO of RiT Tech.

Since the introduction of DCIM to the general market over a decade ago, many changes have taken place in the data centre and infrastructure sector, as the concept struggled to mature. Nevertheless, experts are still predicting a 16% growth to 2024 with a forecast market value of over US$3bn. The reasons for this, are trends such as:

Growth in big data and move towards predictive analytics
IT and Facilities starting to work together
Efficiency and cost reduction required for increased business agility
Aspirations towards the software defined data centre
Moreover, the move towards distributed, digital infrastructures and hybrid environments has been one of the most significant shifts, which necessitates the overview and orchestration of infrastructure environments across multiples sites.

The DNIO concept builds on the foundations of DCIM, and addresses the three major challenges that IT and Data Centre leaders face today:

Increasingly complex, inter-connected, hybrid environments becoming difficult to manage.
Uptime and availability risk for smooth DC Operations.
Efficiency and cost reduction for maximum business agility.
As pioneers in Automated Infrastructure Management (AIM) and intelligent connectivity, and more recently in facilities and IT management, RiT Tech have brought these areas of expertise together, focusing on feedback from multinational clients. Areas such as asset management, integration, speed to implement, and time to value have been common areas of complaint for traditional DCIM users.
