PRESS RELEASE: 26(th) January 2017

Mutual Energy appoints new Director

Moyle Interconnector (Financing) plc wishes to announce a change to the Board of its ultimate parent company, Mutual Energy Limited.

Following on from the retirement non-executive director Clarke Black, Mutual Energy has concluded an open public competition to recruit a new board member. With that process now complete, the company has appointed Michael McKernan as a non-executive director to help guide the company in the years ahead.

Michael brings a wealth of knowledge of both business and government to his new role at Mutual Energy, with particular expertise in the energy and infrastructure sectors. An economist by training, Michael has 25 years' experience working in government, north and south and in senior roles in the Irish energy sector. Most recently, Michael served as Special Advisor to a number of ministers in the Northern Ireland Executive, with responsibility for policy areas including housing, fuel poverty, social regeneration, planning, waste, built and natural heritage and environmental protection. Prior to this, during his time working for Northern Ireland Electricity, Michael spearheaded the company's entry into the southern Irish electricity market which ultimately led to the development of the independent Huntstown Power project. Formerly he was Interconnector Business Manager at NIE, during which time he secured the restoration of the North South Interconnector after a long outage.

In his earlier career, Michael was a professionally qualified Housing Manager in the Northern Ireland Housing Executive. He subsequently joined the Department of Finance in Dublin, where he was a national trade negotiator in Brussels and Geneva and a Director of the National Standards Authority of Ireland. Michael is also a board member of the Integrated Education Fund.

Commenting on the appointment, Mutual Energy Chair Regina Finn said: "We are very much looking forward to Michael joining our board. His knowledge and experience will complement the skills of our other non-executive directors, particularly regarding the consumer dimension to energy. We are confident that Michael's extensive expertise in areas such as strategy and corporate governance, and, particularly in relation to external representation, will be a key asset to Mutual Energy going forward".
