Gold production in Ivory Coast increased to 6,943 kilograms in
2009, an increase of 142% on the 2,874 kg mined in 2008, a senior
official in the ministry of mines and energy announced in the state
newspapers, Fraternite Matin.
Jacques Chevalier, director-general of planning, documentation
and training at the ministry, also said production would increase
strongly with the start of operations at the Tongon gold mine, run
by Randgold Resources (RRS.LN).
The mine is expected to produce around 7.8 tons annually and
will dwarf the country's three current gold operations run by Lihir
Gold Ltd. (LGL.AU) (Bonikro (Hiré) near Divo), Cluff Gold PLC
(CLF.LN) (Angovia) and La Mancha (Ity).
This year's growth was prompted by the start of the production
in Bonikro, the ministry said.
