Google said it would remove URLs to news pages from its Search, News and Discover products in Canada when the Online News Act, or Bill C-18, a new law passed by the Canadian government requiring payment from internet giants to show news links, takes effect.

"The unprecedented decision to put a price on links (a so-called 'links tax') creates uncertainty for our products and exposes us to uncapped financial liability," Google said.

Bill C-18 also makes it "untenable" to continue offering the Google News Showcase product in Canada, the search company said.
