11:26 a.m. ET: General Mills notches best 2-day gain on better-than-expected earnings

Shares of General Mills (GIS) rose for a second straight day after the food giant reported better-than-expected earnings results and full-year guidance on Wednesday.

The company lifted forecasts on its full-year core sales and profit thanks to a boost from higher prices and strong demand for cereals, snack bars and pet food.

β€œMore important than the 3Q beat, in our view, was the company raising its full-year outlook (beyond what was expected exiting 2Q),” Deutsche Bank analyst Steve Powers said in a note.

General Mills stock was up 2.65% to $65.93 per share as of 11:24 a.m. ET after climbing as much as 6% in early trading.

β€œGeneral Mills’ most recent quarterly results showed 14% volume growth YOY for the pet food business. The segment continues to lead in terms of growth for General Mills.

Last month, the company announced that it’s buying Tyson Foods’ pet treat business for a net consideration of $975 million. This should bolster General Mills’ competitive position in the pet food sector and position it for further growth.”

General Mills (GIS) Stock Nears Fresh High on Bull Note
By: Schaeffer's Investment Research | April 15, 2020

β€’ Piper Sandler upgraded General Mills to "overweight" from "neutral"
β€’ Piper Sandler said General Mills is well positioned to outperform in the current market

Packaged food producer General Mills, Inc. (NYSE:GIS) is up 1% at $59.41 after Piper Sandler upgraded the equity to "overweight" from "neutral" and lifted its price target to $67 from $59. The analyst said General Mills' recent retail trends and limited exposure to the foodservice space indicates that it is well positioned to outperform in the current market.

The pop puts GIS at a one-month high, which is just a chip shot from its two-year peak of $60. Looking back, the equity has enjoyed recent support at its 10-day moving average, which helped guide GIS away from its late-March plummet near the $47 region. Since then, GIS is up roughly 25%, and boasts a 10% year-to-date gain.

The majority of the brokerage bunch still isn't sold on General Mills. Of the 12 covering the cereal specialist, only two call it a "strong buy" while the rest say "hold." Adding to this, the consensus 12-month price target of $58.88 is right in line with last night's close.

June 26 (Reuters) - General Mills Inc on Wednesday reported quarterly sales below Wall Street estimates, hurt by lower demand for its snacks in North America.
Net earnings attributable to the company rose to $570.2 million, or 94 cents per share, in the fourth quarter ended May 26, from $354.4 million, or 59 cents per share, a year earlier.
Net sales rose 6.9% to $4.16 billion, below the average analyst estimate of $4.24 billion, according to Refinitiv IBES data.
The boost in quarterly sales came from its acquisition of pet foods company Blue Buffalo last year.

MINNEAPOLIS, March 20, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- General Mills (NYSE: GIS) today reported results for the third quarter ended February 24, 2019. Financial results for the third quarter and first nine months of fiscal 2019 include contributions from Blue Buffalo Pet Products, Inc. ("Blue Buffalo"), which was acquired on April 24, 2018.
"We had a strong third quarter, with positive organic sales growth and significant operating margin expansion," said General Mills Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Harmening. "Our year-to-date performance and fourth-quarter plans give us confidence that we will meet or exceed all of our key fiscal 2019 targets. For the full year, we now expect adjusted diluted EPS and free cash flow conversion will exceed our initial targets, net sales will finish toward the lower end of our guidance range, and adjusted operating profit will finish toward the higher end of the range. Our improved execution and strengthened performance this year reinforce our view that a balanced approach to top and bottom-line growth, centered on our Consumer First strategy, will drive long-term value for our shareholders."

Ok got out yesterday had accumulated 1/3 of what I wanted with the last being 1k @44.23 had previously gotten 275 @44.86 and 771 @45.06

I got out yesterday after it looked like it failed its third attempt to stay above 45 and exited the position @45.06 so ended up with near 1K profit. Then I look back and damn if it isn't trading in the 45.25 range LOL.

It closed just above 45 but after speaking with another trader more experienced with the stock I am going to try and rebuild a 5K long position at around $40 a share +/- 1 and keep those for the long haul.

I got lucky actually as that spike was only on the Chinese tariff talks news which will be short lived.

General Mills Inc. has spent years reformulating cereals like Trix to remove artificial flavors and synthetic colors. Investors will find out this week whether the effort has paid off or whether the muted colors have turned off loyal customers.

The Minneapolis food giant is set to report quarterly earnings Wednesday amid a slumping cereal market. General Mills' U.S. cereal sales fell to $2.31 billion in fiscal 2015 from $2.35 billion in fiscal 2010. In the same time period, the company's overall sales rose 20%, but the Big G cereals remain an important part of its business, contributing 13% of total revenue.

General Mills executives have said restoring growth for its U.S. cereal sales is a top priority for its fiscal year ending in May.

The company isn't alone in its cereal conundrum. Consumers across the country are eating less of the processed oats and grains in milk for breakfast, turning instead to higher-protein, portable meals like Greek yogurt and breakfast sandwiches.

General Mills' expensive cereal project came to fruition in January when it replaced traditional varieties of Golden Grahams, Trix and Reese's Puffs on grocery shelves with new, more-natural versions.

The company said at an industry conference last month that retail cereal sales were trending positive so far, up about 1% in December and January, according to Nielsen. That compares to a 6% drop for its November-ended quarter. The company also said that making its Cheerios gluten free last fall has boosted revenue.

But the real picture is likely to come in General Mills' earnings report Wednesday. Depending on what they see, investors may decide executives' optimism for one of the company's biggest profit drivers is unfounded.
