Largest and longest-running partnership between
a corporation and a theatre company continues through 2019
As the curtain closes on the 40th Humana Festival of New
American Plays, the Humana Foundation, the philanthropic arm of
Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM), announced it is extending its run as the
sponsor of the world-renowned festival at Actors Theatre of
Louisville through 2019.
The Foundation’s support of the Humana Festival of New American
Plays is the longest-running partnership between a corporation and
a theatre company in the U.S. (37 years in 2016). Of the $9.6
million in Humana Foundation charitable contributions during 2015,
more than $4.5 million went to Louisville nonprofits that focus on
healthy behaviors, education and the arts.
“Louisville has given much to Humana as a company, and
therefore, we take great pride in giving back to organizations that
make our hometown vibrant and thriving,” said Virginia Kelly Judd,
Executive Director of the Humana Foundation. “The well-being of our
communities extends beyond physical health, and we are delighted to
be able to offer those who live in Louisville, across our country,
and abroad these culturally rich experiences.”
The Humana Festival of New American Plays has been recognized
with multiple awards over the years, including Pulitzer Prizes and
Obie Awards. Several of the plays that debuted at the Festival were
subsequently made into award-winning movies. More than
three-fourths of Humana Festival plays over the last ten years have
gone on to be produced again at other theatres.
Les Waters, Artistic Director of Actors Theatre of Louisville,
said, “We are thrilled to have the renewed multi-year support of
the Humana Foundation. The Humana Festival of New American Plays
remains the premier new play festival in the nation. We look
forward to honoring the legacy of the Humana Festival as we support
the next generation of great artists.”
In 2015, the hotel economic impact of visitors to the Humana
Festival of New American Plays was $463,500, according to the
Louisville Convention and Visitors Bureau. Those visitors came from
42 states and four countries.
