SunHydrogen CEO Shares Update and Scale-up Plans for 1.92 m² Hydrogen Modules
Press Release | 03/11/2025
CORALVILLE, IA, March 11, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) --
Dear SunHydrogen Shareholders and Supporters:
As we navigate an increasingly complex global landscape marked by economic and geopolitical uncertainties and rapid shifts in policy, we stand steadfast to our commitment. While the world experiences volatility, our mission remains unchanged: to produce renewable hydrogen for the world at an economical price.
In December 2024, we reached a significant milestone by demonstrating hydrogen production using a one-square-meter proof-of-concept prototype. This system incorporated nine 1200 cm² hydrogen modules, each housed in our proprietary enclosure and coated with our proprietary catalysts and protective layers. In January 2025, we further validated the efficiency of this prototype at the University of Tokyo.
This success sets the stage for our next ambitious goal: scaling each module from 1200 cm² to 1.92 m²—a 16-fold increase, bringing us to the size of a standard photovoltaic (PV) module. Achieving this full-module scale is significant: it represents the point at which our technology aligns with the form factor and size of conventional PV modules used in large installations. In other words, a 1.92 m² SunHydrogen module would fit seamlessly into existing large-scale PV module manufacturing processes and project designs, presenting a huge advantage for rapid, widespread adoption. Demonstrating a module of this size that meets our target performance metrics—namely strong solar-to-hydrogen efficiency, long-term stability, and low production cost—will mark a crucial breakthrough on our path to commercialization.
We acknowledge that increment in module size comes with engineering challenges, such as redesigning the housing structure, optimizing larger-scale catalyst and stabilization coating processes, and ensuring safe gas separation. We approach these challenges with a strong sense of confidence and purpose, knowing that our work is backed by substantial capital reserves, world-renowned scientists and engineers, and esteemed development partners—CTF Solar, Honda Research and Development, and COTEC. When inserted into the housing structures, these modules will be utilized in our planned 2025 proof-of-concept demonstrations.
Every week, I am asked: “Why hydrogen?” I am compelled to respond with the following:
While hydrogen is often discussed as a future transportation fuel, it already plays a pivotal role worldwide. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the United States produces daily 27.4 million kilograms of hydrogen primarily through steam methane reforming (SMR). This supplies critical industries such as petroleum refining, ammonia production, chemical manufacturing, and steelmaking.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), each kg of hydrogen produced via SMR generates an average of 9 kilograms of CO2 - adding up to over 246 million kilograms of CO2 released daily. The conclusion is clear: SMR is a carbon-intensive process. If renewable hydrogen can be made economically, it is clearly the better choice.
Looking ahead, Goldman Sachs has projected that hydrogen generation could become a $1 trillion-per-year market by 2050, fueled by expanding applications in heavy industry and long-distance transport. Yet SMR alone cannot meet future demand due to its high emissions, reliance on fossil fuels, and inherent infrastructure constraints. SMR operations depend on centralized plants and significant pipeline or trucking networks, however hydrogen transport and storage infrastructure in 2025 remains limited and costly. Furthermore, many parts of the world including Europe and Asia lack natural gas reserves and are significantly reliant on the import of natural gas. Again, renewable hydrogen is a more viable option.
That’s where SunHydrogen comes in. By using sunlight and water to generate hydrogen at or near the point of use, we:
Eliminate reliance on fossil feedstocks
Remove the complexities of transporting hydrogen over long distances
Enable scalable, modular hydrogen production
Wherever there is real estate and sun, SunHydrogen’s approach positions the entire hydrogen ecosystem for sustainable, cost-effective growth that could extend far beyond current applications.
We deeply appreciate your continued support and confidence in our mission. Together, we are shaping the future of renewable hydrogen and driving the world toward a greener, more resilient energy economy.
Sincerely,
Tim Young, CEO

SunHydrogen Achieves Highest Known Efficiency for a Large-Area Hydrogen Module
Press Release | 02/05/2025
CORALVILLE, IA , Feb. 05, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- SunHydrogen, Inc. (OTCQB: HYSR), the developer of a breakthrough technology to produce renewable hydrogen using sunlight and water, today shared strong test results from a recent trip to Japan where members of the SunHydrogen team collaborated with consultants Prof. Kazunari Domen, Dr. Hiroshi Nishiyama and Dr. Taro Yamada at the University of Tokyo and visited the Honda R&D facility in Tochigi.
Breakthrough in Large Area Solar-to-Hydrogen Efficiency
At Prof. Domen’s laboratory at the University of Tokyo, SunHydrogen conducted large-area solar testing of its 1200cm² hydrogen modules, manufactured in collaboration with CTF Solar, that comprised the Company’s recent 1m² demonstration system.
SunHydrogen is pleased to report that the 1200cm² modules demonstrated an active-area solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of 9%. Importantly, this marks the highest reported efficiency for a hydrogen module of this size.
Previously, SunHydrogen validated an efficiency exceeding 10% in its 100cm² hydrogen modules, tested at Honda R&D. The current results demonstrate that even after scaling up tenfold, the Company remains close to the 10% active-area efficiency threshold – an achievement that underscores the viability of its technology at larger scales.
Additionally, the modules were tested under wide temperatures, ranging from 5°C to 40°C and their efficiency remained stable across the full temperature range. The team utilized a state-of-the-art LED solar simulator, uniquely capable of simulating the solar spectrum over a large enough area to test modules of this scale.
“Scaling up tenfold presents unique challenges, and we are extremely pleased to have maintained such high efficiency in our first large-area test. To our knowledge, this remains the highest reported efficiency for a hydrogen module of this scale,” said SunHydrogen’s CEO Tim Young.
“These results give us confidence that with further design optimization, including maximizing active water-splitting area and refining catalyst loading, we can push efficiencies to 10% and beyond in future generations of larger modules,” said SunHydrogen’s Chief Technology Officer Dr. Syed Mubeen. “We are also thrilled to come away from this trip with critical data confirming the stability of our hydrogen modules under varying temperatures.”
Advancing Real-World Testing with Honda
Following its laboratory testing at the University of Tokyo, the SunHydrogen team visited its joint development partners at Honda R&D in Tochigi, Japan. At their facilities, the team observed on-sun rooftop testing of SunHydrogen’s 100cm² hydrogen modules.
“We were particularly impressed by Honda’s innovative housing unit design, which enables hydrogen and oxygen separation without the use of membranes – a first-of-its-kind approach – and we will continue ongoing testing of the 100cm² modules,” Dr. Mubeen said.
Honda will soon test SunHydrogen’s 1200cm² modules under on-sun conditions using a similar rooftop setup, and SunHydrogen is eager to utilize the performance data from these extended tests to further refine its module design.
“Our visit to Japan provided valuable insights and key validation for SunHydrogen’s technology in both controlled laboratory conditions and real-world outdoor environments,” Mr. Young said. “The University of Tokyo’s unique solar simulator enabled the most comprehensive and precise efficiency testing of our large-area modules to date, while Honda’s membrane-free separation approach represents a significant milestone in real-world implementation. We extend our sincere gratitude to the entire Honda R&D team under the leadership of Mr. Yuichi Matsuo, as well as to Prof. Domen, Dr. Yamada and Dr. Nishiyama.”

You lot are getting precisely what was desired.
We are all getting exactly what was advertised would be more accurate. Somehow the whole ridiculous theory of "Don't take him literally, take him seriously," took hold. Or whatever the hell it was. I, and millions of others didn't want another Biden term or Harris, but we voted Harris because we believed what Trump said. While millions more voted Trump because they didn't believe what he said. What a topsy-turvy fucked up country we are. Now we are going to pay the price. Welcome to, government of the rich, by the rich, for the rich.

SunHydrogen Releases Video Showcasing 1m² Green Hydrogen Panel Demonstration
Press Release | 01/15/2025
CORALVILLE, IA , Jan. 15, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- SunHydrogen, Inc. (OTCQB: HYSR), the developer of a breakthrough technology to produce renewable hydrogen using sunlight and water, today released a new video showcasing its green hydrogen panel demonstration at the 1m² scale. The video can be viewed on SunHydrogen’s website here.
“On December 11, 2024, our team successfully demonstrated hydrogen production in subfreezing temperatures outside the SunHydrogen laboratory in Coralville, IA,” said SunHydrogen’s Chief Technology Officer Dr. Syed Mubeen. “This video memorializes our achievement.”
Green hydrogen is produced through electrolysis powered by renewable sources such as wind, solar or hydroelectric power. This process involves splitting water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen, with hydrogen being the resulting fuel. No greenhouse gases are emitted during green hydrogen production or consumption. However, a vast majority of today’s green hydrogen producers transport their product over long distances, so although the hydrogen itself is green, the delivery and transport infrastructure is carbon intensive and costly.
“Our solution will eliminate the need to transport hydrogen fuel over long distances,” said SunHydrogen’s CEO Tim Young. “We plan to offer on-site solar hydrogen generation at or near the point of use: No more long distance transport resulting in high costs and hydrogen losses.”
Additionally, the Company’s technology is fully self-contained and is not reliant on grid power for operation.
“With the completion of our commercially-relevant 1m² demonstration, we can now begin the site selection process for larger pilot demonstrations at the 25m² scale and beyond,” Dr. Mubeen said.
Last fall, the Company joined the Texas Hydrogen Alliance, a coalition of industry leaders dedicated to advancing the hydrogen economy in Texas. Representatives from SunHydrogen also recently visited potential pilot plant sites in Hawaii alongside members of the Honda R&D team.
“I would once again like to thank the team at Honda R&D Co., the University of Iowa, the University of Michigan, Niigata Co., Ltd, and our expert consultants Prof. Kazunari Domen, Dr. Hiroshi Nishiyama, and Dr. Taro Yamada for their support,” Mr. Young concluded. “We look forward to building on this progress in 2025 as we set our sights on even greater milestones.”
