Significant shareholding

The Company received notification on 27 December 2006 that Schroders plc has an
interest in an aggregate of 21,081,156 ordinary shares in the Company, which are
held in portfolios managed on a discretionary basis for clients under investment
management agreements with Schroder Investment Management Limited and its
associates and subsidiaries. This holding represents 14.99% of the issued share
capital of the Company.

The notification also discloses the British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme as
being the registered owners of 4,656,188 ordinary shares in the Company and the
Mineworkers' Pension Scheme as being the registered owners of 5,356,188 ordinary
shares in the Company. These holdings represent 3.31% and 3.81% respectively of
the issued share capital of the Company.
