From New York to California and from New Delhi to Beijing projects are being planned or are underway to have trucks and buses running on a clean blend of hydrogen and natural gas fuel called Hythane. According to Eden Energy Ltd, the owners of the Hythane technology, this patented fuel is being adopted so broadly that Hythane has become the popular term for many other blends of hydrogen and natural gas used as vehicle fuel. Hythane, however, is a precise formula that leverages hydrogen to gain maximum reductions in harmful NOx emissions while maintaining engine power and fuel mileage efficiency. Hythane was developed as a practical and affordable fuel to reduce dependence on petroleum while the infrastructure is established for a full transition to a hydrogen economy.Using Hythane in vehicles today achieves an immediate environmental benefit by significantly reducing greenhouse gases and particulates that affect air quality. Like Xerox, Hythane has entered the language to describe both our original product and all the others following in its footsteps, said Greg Solomon, CEO, Eden Energy Ltd. What remains unique about Hythane is our optimized blend hits a sweet spot with hydrogen that results in a 95% reduction in emissions compared to petroleum diesel. Even compared to cleaner natural-gas powered vehicles, Hythane reduces harmful nitrogen oxides by half. New projects using Hythane and Hythane derivatives in truck and bus fleets are being reviewed for funding in many U.S .cities such as New York, Syracuse, Albany, Niagara Falls, Las Vegas, Barstow, Santa Monica, and Sacramento. National programs are also underway in India and China. At an April 2008 event in New York City, non-profit Energy Vision and actor Blythe Danner joined city business leaders, environmentalists, community activists, and political figures to debut new natural gas garbage trucks, bringing the citys total to 38 natural gas vehicles which they see as a step to using cleaner fuels like Hythane.City officials in Syracuse, NY also announced in November 2007 that they are converting garbage trucks to run on Hythane, and have built a hydrogen fueling station that could soon be used for consumer vehicles. In California, the Hydrogen Highway initiative spearheaded by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has begun the funding process for constructing Hythane fueling stations to establish a clean fuel infrastructure to improve air quality in Southern California. San Francisco International Airport has secured funds to convert its shuttle bus fleet to run on Hythane and Los Angeles Airport is reviewing a proposal to also convert its shuttle buses. Many other cities in the western U.S., including Las Vegas and San Diego, are poised to convert their municipal fleets to Hythane as soon as state and federal funding is available. Canada is also embracing Hythane. Vancouver offers a public Hythane fueling station, and Montreal city buses run on Hythane. The SunLine Bus Company has used Hythane buses in the U.S. and Canada for years. Daily news reports continue about car manufacturers plans for hydrogen fueled vehicles. Volvo selected Hythane as one of the five fuels it offers in its new multi-fuel vehicle prototype. BMW has created a Series 7 model powered by pure hydrogen, distributing prototype vehicles to high profile figures and celebrities who have been active in environmental causes. As these projects gather momentum, India is at the front of the pack. In February, the Indian government selected Eden Energy to install the first public hydrogen fueling station in New Delhi. Driven by the need to address poor air quality in its major cities, India has selected Hythane as a transitional fuel in its roadmap to a pure hydrogen economy. India has set a target of having at least 20% of all vehicles operate on hydrogen-based fuel by 2020. Eden Energys Hythane projects in India, the U.S., and Europe are seen as a springboard for commercial adoption of Hythane worldwide. The benefits of Hythane are available right now to cities in the United States and around the world, according to Greg Solomon. India in particular is a model to the world in which Hythane is the fuel of choice to move toward a hydrogen economy. The use of Hythane leverages the existing natural gas transportation infrastructure. An estimated 7 million natural gas vehicles and 10,000 natural gas fueling stations already exist worldwide, presenting an extensive market for Hythane, which is significantly less expensive than diesel fuel or gasoline and offers near-zero emissions. In addition, petroleum vehicles can be easily and cost-effectively converted to run on natural gas.
